🔋 Range Rover Sport PHEV Charging Fault – Not Every Battery Needs Replacing! 🔋

This Range Rover Sport PHEV came to us after being assessed elsewhere, where a DC-DC charging unit had been recommended.

As always, we carried out our own diagnostic assessment before replacing any parts.

What did we find?

The fault wasn’t the DC-DC converter at all.

Our testing identified a problem within the high-voltage battery contactors, caused by a known software-related issue within the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

If you ask Land Rover, the official repair route is often a complete replacement high-voltage battery. 💷💷💷

For many owners, that’s a frighteningly expensive repair.

Instead, we’ve sourced a specialist company that repairs these batteries. They strip and repair the battery internally before carrying out extensive testing on a dedicated simulator rig to ensure it performs correctly before being returned with a warranty.

Today we safely removed the high-voltage battery and prepared it for shipping.

With a bit of luck, this Range Rover will be back on the road and charging normally by the end of next week.

This is a perfect example of why diagnostics matter.

Anyone can fit parts.

The real skill is identifying the actual cause of the fault and finding the most appropriate repair solution.

This week in the workshop we’ve got a Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG stripped down for major engine repairs, with the camshafts and cam carrier removed as part of our investigation and repair process.

We’ve had an absolutely exhausting few days in the workshop! 😅

In the last few days we’ve repaired:

🔧 A VW Sharan needing a new NOx absorbing catalyst, previously diagnosed as a DPF issue!

🔧 A Ford Transit that had previously had a DPF delete and dodgy remap, once restored the underlying issue identified as a faulty engine coolant thermostat

🔧 A Ford C-Max with a failed DPF, sent to us from a fast fit centre “requiring a DPF clean”

🔧 A Peugeot with a failed DPF causing NOx efficiency faults, from a car sales company after fitting NOX sensor & adblue injector!

🔧 A Mercedes with an overheated DPF caused by air/fuel ratio issues, identified during routine service by ourselves.

🔧 A Ford Transit requiring a replacement rear back box due to corrosion, identified as part of our industry leading multi point health check.

The good news?

✅ All fixed
✅ All running correctly
✅ All back to manufacturer standards

What frustrates us is how often we see vehicles that have had DPF deletes, emissions systems removed or poor-quality remaps fitted to mask a fault.

The owner is usually told it’s a cheaper solution.

The reality?

Most of the time it ends up costing far more to put right afterwards than it would have done to simply diagnose and repair the fault correctly in the first place.

At Intelligent Auto we don’t delete systems and hope for the best.

We test.
We diagnose.
We prove the fault.
Then we fix it properly.

Because fixing the cause is always better than hiding the symptom.

The car that’s currently breaking the internet…

The new Ferrari Luce.

A fully electric Ferrari. Four doors. Four seats. And yours for the bargain price of just £550,000.

Now, I don’t know about you, but in the society we live in there seems to be two groups of people:

🚗 Those who can casually drop half a million pounds on a Ferrari.

🔋 And those of us comparing electricity tariffs to keep the Nissan Leaf topped up.

I’m genuinely pro-EV and fair play to Ferrari for stepping into the electric world. It was always going to happen.

But… am I the only one looking at it thinking it could have been a bit prettier?

Maybe Ferrari have been raiding the archives and taken inspiration from some classic Lancia designs. Maybe it’ll grow on us. Maybe I’m just getting old.

Either way, I’d love to know what you think.

🐾 If you’re bringing your car in, make sure you say hi to Ron!

Our little workshop mascot, Ron the French Bulldog, is always on hand to welcome customers, supervise the team, and make sure standards stay high (especially when treats are involved).

He may not be much use with diagnostics, but he’s excellent for customer service. 😄

🚗 A refreshing reminder that honesty still exists in the motor trade…

A local primary school teacher brought her Peugeot 208 to us after her usual garage had warned her about replacing the timing belt on the “wet belt” engine.

She booked in with us for the job.

As always, before any work starts, we carried out our complimentary vehicle health & safety check.

When our technician started stripping down for the belt replacement, he quickly found the belt had already been changed previously — and was still in great condition 👍

So what did we do?

❌ Carry on and charge for work not needed?
❌ Keep quiet and take the money?

Absolutely not.

✅ We stopped the job
✅ Contacted the customer
✅ Sent over a full inspection report showing the real issues we had found:

• Suspension wear
• Weak battery
• Brake fluid needing attention

The customer was genuinely shocked by the honesty and said she’d never experienced such transparency from a garage before.

She cancelled the timing belt work and instead asked us to carry out the repairs the car actually needed.

That’s how we work.

We don’t sell fear.
We don’t guess.
We inspect, test and advise honestly.

What a Result!

After just 4 days in the role, Alisha — our new Trainee Service Adviser — is already making such a positive impression that customers are bringing in gifts to say thank you.

That says everything about the importance of attitude, personality, and genuine customer care. Skills can be taught, systems can be learned, but making people feel valued comes naturally to the right person.

Alisha joined us with no motor trade background, but with the right mindset and a passion for helping people. Early signs suggest we may have found a star.

Misfire. No Fault Codes. No Guesswork.

This Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI came to us with a clear misfire concern, but the engine ECU had no stored fault codes to point us in the right direction.

For many garages, this is where the parts darts begin…
Injectors changed. Sensors swapped. Money spent.

Using an oscilloscope and non-intrusive testing methods, we analysed live engine data and compared cylinder patterns to identify the weak cylinder without removing parts or replacing anything unnecessarily.
