Absolutely — this sounds like a proper Rusty Car Fab Ltd custom build, and there’s a lot going into it. The Combo is already based on the Fiat Doblò platform, so the Doblò front-end idea makes sense as a starting point.

2016 Vauxhall Combo 1.4T

We thought it was time for an update on our own custom build — and this one is definitely starting to get interesting! 😈

We originally bought an Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4T specifically for the engine and conversion.

The MiTo was completely stripped, including all of its wiring, before we set about fitting the engine into the Combo.

Once the engine was physically in place, we spent a couple of days working through the wiring, ECU connections and earths, trying to make everything work together.

And finally… SHE RUNS! 🔥

It’s been a lot of work to get to this point, but seeing it fire up for the first time made it all worthwhile.

🔧 STILL TO DO:

⚡ Electrical
• Work out and repair the door wiring
• Get electric windows working
• Get central locking working
• Go through all the lighting wiring and get everything operating correctly

💨 Exhaust
• Custom-made 3” stainless steel side-exit exhaust

🔥 Turbo / Intake
• Upgrade the intercooler
• Custom hard pipework
• Reduce the amount of silicone hose used
• Improve airflow and hopefully gain some additional boost response

🛑 Brakes
• Full brake upgrade to match the engine conversion

🛞 Wheels & Suspension
• New wheels
• Then the big question… coilovers or custom air ride? 🤔

💪 Bodywork
• Completely custom-made steel arches
• 2” wider all round
• Built specifically for the new stance and wheel setup

🔥 Front End
The original front bumper is being replaced with a Fiat Doblò bumper, which will then be heavily customised.

We’re planning a custom splitter and hockey-stick extensions to tie the front end into the new extended arches.

We’re still undecided on the final colour, so we’re open to suggestions.

Dodge Ram — Progress So Far 🔧 GLasgow based job

Not every day we get the chance to work on a Dodge Ram, so this one has been an interesting job!

Day 1: We arrived on site expecting to fit a few patches. Once we got a proper look at the vehicle, we discovered some shocking welding that had previously been carried out by another company.

The welding was simply not to a standard that we were prepared to put our name to.

Rather than just patch over someone else’s work and carry on, we made the decision to stop and start the job properly — at no extra cost to the customer.

We began grinding back all the pigeon-sh*t welding, cutting out the previous patches, removing every pinhole we could find and replacing everything with fresh 1.2mm steel plate.

This job was originally only meant to be a 3-day job, but because we have refused to cut corners, it has now turned into a return visit next week to complete everything to the standard it should have been done to in the first place.

Our opinion as a business is simple:

We can’t leave a job knowing we’ve put our name to work that isn’t right.

The last thing we want is for a customer to come back to us in 6 or 12 months needing repairs to something that should never have needed repaired in the first place.

Yes, it’s taken us longer. Yes, we’ve had to put more time into the job than originally planned.

But at the end of the day, our name is on the work — and we take pride in that.

We would rather do the job properly the first time, even if it costs us extra time, than take shortcuts just to get the job finished.
