Founded in the 1960’s, PiperCams are the UK’s oldest specialist camshaft designer and manufacturer still in operation today. Piper’s roots lie enriched in racing history. Founder member George Henrotte was a successul F3 racing driver, racing alongside greats such as Sir Stirling Moss. After retiring from racing, George ran the Gemini F3 team before teaming up with Ken Packham, Bob Gayler and McLaren M1A body designer, Tony Hilder. This partnership gave birth to the Piper company. Piper soon became a well known name in the international world of motor sport, as well as the tuning community, not only for engine tuning and engine tuning products, but also for the design and manufacture of both racing and sports cars.
Owing to the growing success of the company, Piper soon outgrew their premises and it was decided to separate the company into two. The car side of the company remained in their current premises whilst under the helm of George and Bob, the tuning side relocated to Ashford in Kent. It was at this point that PiperCams as it is known today was born. As well as producing engine conversion kits, tuning products and offering tuning services, PiperCams worked closely with motor manufacturers helping to produce more fuel efficient engines, whilst at the same time producing more power and performance. A typical example from that point of Piper’s history would be the Ford “Pinto” engine. Piper not only worked closely with Ford in the design, but they later designed the Piper Twin Cam, this being a modified Pinto cylinder head with Piper designed twin camshafts, to fit the standard 2.0 Ford Pinto engine block.
Since those early years PiperCams have continued to lead the way in camshaft design. Now operating from their 35,000 sq/ft state of the art CNC equipped premises in Folkestone Kent, they continue to work closely with car and motorcycle manufacturers as well as the leading UK race engine builders. Piper are not only proud of their success in motor sport from Lawnmower racing through all levels including Karting, Banger Racing, Motor Cross, Hill Climb, Indy Car, BTCC, NGTC, DTM, World Rallying, Nascar and of course F1, but also in their continued participation in the motoring industry, helping to produce some of the most advanced engines on today’s roads. Regardless of if it is a family saloon, supercar, hot hatch, touring or sports bike, you could be driving a car or riding a motorcycle with camshafts designed by Piper without knowing it.
Of course when talking about Piper’s success in Motorsport, it would be foolish to ignore their success in the world of motorcycles. This includes World Superbikes, British Superbikes, Sidecar Racing, Isle of Man TT, Classic Isles of Man TT, Hill Climb and Drag Racing, to name but a few.
