Dodge charger
Bit of muscle car Friday, this 440 big block beast was presented with a Holley sniper fitted but questionable idle and drive ability.
We often find that when fitted and set up correctly these aftermarket EFI systems can work very well, that being said, any mechanical faults or issues with the engine will only be amplified when converted to EFI so when undertaking this conversion we always emphasise that your engine be in the best possible running condition.
This charger had a variety of teething problems, we started with poor voltage, (voltage is one of the worst problems you can encounter with EFI and ECU’s, from low fuel pressure, incorrect injector latency and quality of spark) this was quickly resolved with a new alternator and voltage regulator.
Next was a nice new set of NGK spark plugs and a compression test to confirm the health of the engine, we then performed a global reset of the sniper (very often we find it better to start from scratch with the ECU to confirm the correct software and calibration has been loaded), unfortunately this did not help and further investigation of the engine was required.
Due to a lot of missfire/backfiring through the injection/throttle body we decided to check ignition/injection and cam/crank timing. After checking the cam timing via the rockers we suspected that the engine timing was incorrect while also noting that there seemed to be a lot of slack between the engine rotation and rocker arm movement, the next step was to remove the front cover and confirm the timing.
Once stripped down an excessively slack timing chain was visible and under closer inspection also 1 tooth out of time.
With lots of new parts now fitted and an engine service done we could get back to setting up the Sniper which went blissfully well giving plenty of torque and very usable muscle car.
The only job left on the list was to sort the A/C, a few leaks and a control valve for the EFI and all was running smoothly.
Another turn key classic with some mod cons and sent back out into the world.
