Why so yellow??

Here’s a quick run down of some of the key features you should be looking for on sailing waterproofs.

Loads of pockets, snuggly collar, good fit, adjustable cuffs and a well fitting hood. Not to mention as waterproof as you can afford!

No such thing as bad weather????

Who’s heard that before? There’s always one smarty pants who trots out the old saying when it starts to drizzle.

Now I do fully agree that we can tog up and put on decent gear to make the day less horrid but after a whole morning of bailing boats just as fast as they were filling up with rain, I was beginning to feel like the saying was just a conspiracy cooked up by clothing brands!

What sailing sailings do you agree or disagree with. There’s some great ones!

Storm Austen is here!

We waited until the worst had gone through then needed to come and check all the boats had behaved themselves. Northwesterly is quite a good direction for us as there isn’t too much fetch to build up a sea but it sure is blowing!!

All of our boats seem to be happy, but there looks to be at least one on the far shore that’s broken free and a few head sails and stack packs flogging about like crazy things in the moorings.

Hopefully your boats are all surviving if this winds heading your way!

How do you leave your boat on the mooring? Do you have a different set up when the wind gets up? Or are you always belt and braces?

Our boats are in and out every day so we normally run with the harbour supplied mooring strop, but when the wind gets angry or we’re leaving the boat for more that a day or two we add this arrangement. Remember this is just what we find works for us and every boat will need a tailored approach. It’s up to you to build a system that works for you.

Have a play with knots and angles. Angles between strops and secondaries should be no more than 45deg ideally. I find the prussik type knot works well on our chain but you might find you can tie in differently.

Let us know what works for you, share experiences and knowledge. It helps everyone safe and less stressed when the wind gets up.

I know the bow has some pretty horrid staining on. Unfortunately the galvanising on our strip seems to have failed but that’s a winter job now! Like I say, I’d soon keep the strop off the bow and use a line to go through but it doesn’t really work where we are.

Well I guess it can’t all be smooth seas and dolphins.

With winter on its way here’s a quick look at how we try to keep Zara safe when the forecast turns purple.

We lift the anchor out as when boats really start to pitch the anchor can catch the mooring strop.

By equalising these strop to another storing point on deck it lessens the isolated load on parts of the boat.

Having seen the damage a strop does when it jumps out of the roller, we tie them in! Don’t do it super tight as it still needs to move. Just enough to catch it before it escapes.

A head sail cover is a great investment, in summer they protect the sail from UV (we have a uv strip but still use a cover if the boat is sitting about for an extended period), the added benefit is they stop the sail trying to unfurl in high winds.

All rigging is away from the mast.

The boom is tied centrally.

Downstairs is stowed correctly.

Winter is coming…

Not to worry though, contrary to popular belief we don’t actually run off to sit on a beach all winter; we keep sailing! At least until December any way.

Every Sunday in November you can join us, 10:00-14:00 for £60 per session. We’ll be staying local and working on skills and drills rather than trying to clock up mileage. Last year we did marina skills if the wind wasn’t playing ball, man overboard recovery drills, basic points of sail, spinnakers and radar work. There’s no set plan just see what looks fun on the day.

If you’re new to sailing, recently qualified or are a boat owner whose boat is ashore for winter. Come along, get stuck in and make some new friends.
