When you're behind the wheel of a Mercedes CLS 63, it's all its performance, how it looks, the kudos, and that unmistakable AMG exhaust rumble.

It's easy to forget just how much engineering is squeezed in under the bonnet to give you the ultimate driving experience.

But over time, things can wear down without you even realising.

Pete just stripped the front of this V8 engine down to replace the timing chain, and he shows us why specialist maintenance is non-negotiable on these cars.

If you own a CLS 63 and you're not sure if it's due for a timing chain inspection, contact us. We can look it up for you. millimetres of clearance, right against the subframe. If the mounts begin to sag or the chain gets loose, it can trigger a domino effect that damages the parts around them. Ignoring it could be catastrophic for the engine.

These cars are built to thrill, but keeping them at peak performance takes a specialist.

Noticing any subtle warning signs early makes a big difference.

If you own a CLS 63 and you're not sure if it's due a timing chain inspection, contact us. We can look it up for you.

Reviews like this make our week.

Nobody has to take the time to write a Google review with such kind words about a garage, but this lady did!

When it happens, it impacts on the whole team in the best way.

As a small, local business in Marsh Barton, we never take it for granted. Reviews are important to us. Every great review tells us what we want to know; not just that the job got done well, but that you’ve felt looked after. And, they help other local drivers find us.

What makes you take the time to leave a review? We’d love your comments.

There’s a lot of talk at the moment about the risk of investing in young people, and we’re not really hearing about the risk of not investing in them.

The shortage of skilled technicians is already with us, whether it’s here in Exeter, or around the UK. If the trade doesn't back young people now, it's going to get worse.

When a young person has a genuine interest in cars, they learn fast.

Their brains are wired for the digital world , and today's Mercedes, BMW and Mini models are basically computers on wheels. They pick it up quickly.

They also challenge outdated thinking which helps any trade adapt with the times.

Some of today's apprentices are tomorrow's business owners, but without giving them a solid start, we wouldn’t be giving them the chance to shape the future.

So yes, it takes time and can be frustrating, but the results are worth it and we're proud to offer that start for our young people when we can!

If you believe the trade needs to back young people gives us a like.

Mercedes, BMW and Mini tyres aren't cheap to buy

Wheel alignment that's even slightly out can wear them down quickly. It's one of those things that costs very little to check and a lot more if you ignore it

When done properly, it's measured with precision using camera technology. The kit we use reads exactly where each wheel is pointing and adjusts them from there.
If your car is pulling to one side or wearing tyres unevenly, it's time to take action.

Going away in the car this week? Don’t skip this 🚗

The weather’s changed dramatically this week… for the better thankfully ☀️

But hot weather, long journeys and bank holiday / half-term traffic can put extra strain on your car — especially if there’s already an underlying issue.

Before a long motorway drive, here are some quick car checks we’d recommend doing first.

We’ve called it the DRIVE check:

D — Dashboard warning lights
R — Rubber (tyres)
I — Inspect fluids (oil)
V — Vision (wiper blades & washer fluid)
E — Engine cooling (coolant / air con)

A quick 10-minute check before you leave is a lot better than sitting on the hard shoulder waiting for breakdown recovery later.

Especially when the car’s full of dogs, kids, luggage and everything else 😅

Safe travels wherever you’re heading this bank holiday or half term.

Comment 🚘 if you’ve got a long drive planned.

Behind the scenes at MBS Exeter

We only usually get to see the waiting room when we take our car in for servicing or repairs, so we thought we'd give you a glimpse into what our day looks like as we work on Mercedes, BMW's and Minis around the Exeter area.

Give us a like if you'd like to see more of workshop life

20 years of BMW expertise. A bit perplexed on this one.

We deal with all sorts at MBS Exeter. Give us brake pads, suspension, diagnostics and repairs — no problem.

But just when we think we've seen it all, this comes into the workshop. A rodent nesting in a BMW 2 Series boot, taking out the iDrive.

That one had us stumped. Not on how to fix it, but on how to stop the thing coming back.
Some people swear by mint oil. Pete uses ultrasonics in his shed and hasn't had a problem since. A cat, maybe ???!

We’d love some suggestions on this one — if you've ever had to deal with rodents in a car, give us your tips in the comments. We’d genuinely love to hear any stories!

If you've ever nodded along at the garage without understanding a word…….

You’ve taken your Mercedes, BMW or MINI to a garage in the Exeter area and left feeling more confused than when you arrived. You’re not the only one!

Taking your car to the garage can feel overwhelming, especially when you're not sure what you're walking into.
You just want to understand what's happening with your car, what it'll cost, and when you can get it back.
Explanations shouldn't feel like listening to another language

So, when you’re looking for a garage, add this to your list of non-negotiables as you make your choice. You can thank us later!

What's the one thing that would make you switch garages? Tell us in the comments.

Is your suspension shot?

Following the oil trail further up into the suspension, George’s original diagnosis is confirmed— oil leaking from a failed shock absorber.

In cases like this, the failure can happen through wear over time inside the shock itself. Internal seals tend to deteriorate, especially on higher mileage vehicles or cars that have spent years dealing with rough roads and potholes.

That’s why regular visual vehicle checks are so important. Problems like this can stay hidden during everyday driving until the damage becomes more serious.

When shock absorbers do fail, they normally need replacing in pairs to keep the handling balanced across the axle.

Some signs your shock absorbers may be damaged:

➡The car feels bouncy or unstable
➡The handling feels unsettled over bumps
➡The car seems to wander more on the road
➡You notice oil around the suspension area (difficult to see. There might be oil on the ground)

If your suspension hasn't been checked in a while, you have a long journey coming up, and live in Exeter or surrounding areas , or you just want peace of mind, we’re always happy to take a look.

This wasn't on the job sheet...

Your car is booked in for one thing, and suddenly you're shown something else. It can feel very uncomfortable.

Sometimes it's unavoidable. In this instance, the car came in with an engine warning light and once up on the ramp, one of the shock absorbers gave way when the suspension fully extended — which is why you're seeing George clearing up.

Of course, you'd wonder why, but sometimes there are underlying issues due to hidden damage or wear and tear.

When a shock absorber is already heavily worn, lifting the car can expose a problem that was already there. It's a bit like stretching an elastic band that's already on its last legs — one day it just can't cope anymore.

It's quite common for higher mileage Mercedes, BMW and Mini owners, or cars that have picked up pothole damage on Devon's roads.

We'll always show you exactly what's happened so you can see it for yourself, and then it's totally up to you what you'd like to do next.
If something like this happens and doesn't feel right, just ask. A good garage will always explain it properly.

If you’ve got any concerns and drive a Mercedes, BMW or Mini in the Exeter area, get in touch, we're always happy to have a look and explain what's going on with your car.

If you’ve never seen a blown shock absorber before, keep an eye out for Part 2 and we'll show you!
