Get the boring car stuff out of the way, so you can enjoy the good stuff.

Booking your car in for a service probably isn't going to be the highlight of your week.
But once it's done, it's done.

And when you're heading off for a weekend away, a day on the coast or just getting on with everyday life, that's exactly how you want it to feel, one less thing sitting at the back of your mind.

Keeping on top of regular servicing might not be the exciting part of owning a car. Getting in it and enjoying where it takes you, most definitely is!

At MBS Exeter in Marsh Barton, we specialise in Mercedes-Benz, BMW and MINI servicing, diagnostics and repairs for customers across Exeter and the surrounding Devon area.

Most of us judge whether something’s wrong with our car by how it feels to drive.

There may not be anything obvious like pulling to one side, the steering might feel fine and you’re happy driving it as you go about your day.

But your tyres might be telling a different story.

If your wheel alignment is out, your tyres can start wearing unevenly, and to begin with, you might not notice anything different as you drive.

That could mean having to replace your tyres sooner than you need to, simply because they haven’t been wearing evenly.

So you don’t necessarily need to wait until the car feels different to think about your wheel alignment.

Have you hit a nasty pothole (and there are plenty around here!) or a kerb? That can be a good reason to have the alignment checked.

Having new tyres fitted? Checking the alignment can help give them the best chance of wearing evenly from the start.

And then there are the more obvious signs that something may not be right, unusual or uneven tyre wear, the steering feeling different or the car pulling to one side.
These don’t automatically mean your wheel alignment is the cause, but they’re good reasons to get things checked.

At MBS Exeter, we use laser wheel alignment equipment for Mercedes-Benz, BMW and MINI models. If you want to know more, just give us a call or message us and we’ll happily talk it through with you.

Sometimes your car can feel absolutely fine — but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something worth checking.

What makes an older car worth keeping?

This mid-90s Mercedes SL320 was recently in our workshop for a fair bit of work.

And with a car of this age, there comes a point where you could look at what needs doing, compare it with the car’s financial value and question whether it makes sense.

But that’s not always how people feel about their cars.

Sometimes you know its history. You know how it drives. You’ve owned it for years. Or quite simply, you really enjoy owning it and you’d rather look after the car you have than replace it with something newer.

We work on Mercedes-Benz, BMW and MINI models across the generations at MBS Exeter.

New or old, if a car matters to its owner, we totally get why looking after it matters too.

What's the longest you've kept a car for and why? Let us know in the comments!

Leaving your car with us at MBS in Marsh Barton and wondering what to do while you wait?

One local place we’d definitely recommend is The Exeter Trading Hub.

If you enjoy having a rummage for something a bit different, you can easily lose an hour or two in there. There are all sorts of curiosities for the home and garden, old and new.

And while you’re there, the Hidden Coffee House is a good excuse to stop for coffee, something sweet or a bite to eat.

So, Exeter locals — what else would you recommend doing near Marsh Barton while your car’s in the garage? Let us know in the comments so we can share it!

If you've booked in with us before, you'll know what we mean!

One issue you don't want to be dealing with during these heatwaves...

We're talking coolant leaks...

For anyone wondering why heat makes this worse:

The coolant in your car has to work harder in extreme heat to absorb and move engine heat. With a leak, heavy traffic or a worn part, it can boil over, evaporate faster, or stop protecting the engine properly; that's when you risk your car overheating.

Luckily, we caught this one early. A bit of investigation with a pressure tester and it was sorted.

➡None of us want to be that car on the hard shoulder, kids and dog in the back, melting in this heat.

If you've got any concerns about your BMW, MINI or Mercedes and coolant, or if you haven't had it checked this summer, get in touch with us and we'd be happy to help

You don’t need to know everything about cars. But these things are worth knowing.

1. Service your car because of time as well as mileage.
Yes, even if you hardly drive it!
Oil and parts degrade over time. Low mileage doesn’t mean maintenance-free.

2. Use the right engine oil.
Not all oils are created equal.
Your manufacturer approved that specification for a reason. The wrong oil might not cause a problem straight away, but over time it can affect wear, efficiency and engine life.

3. Turning up the music is not a solution when you hear a new noise or vibration.
Cars are very good at telling you when something isn’t right.
Most faults don’t disappear on their own. They usually just get more expensive.

4. Look after your tyres and they’ll look after you.
Tyres are easily forgotten, but they’re the only part of your car actually touching the road.
Correct pressures, good tread and quality tyres make a real difference to braking, handling and safety.

5. Choose a garage that really knows your brand of car.
Modern BMWs, Mercedes and MINIs often need specialist software, equipment and knowledge.
The cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest repair.

6. Don’t ignore warning lights because “the car still drives OK”.
Driving around with a dashboard looking like Blackpool Illuminations isn’t cool!
Modern BMWs, Mercedes and MINIs are clever. Many problems start small. Deal with a warning light early and it’s likely to be much cheaper to sort out.

7. A consistent service history is one of the best investments you can make in your car.
Regular servicing and maintenance helps protect reliability and resale value, and gives future buyers confidence that your car has been properly cared for.

Looking after a BMW, Mercedes or MINI isn’t about spending more money.
It’s about spending it wisely.

If you know someone who’s just bought their first BMW, Mercedes or MINI? Send this to them. They can thank us later!

Everyone’s talking about AI.

So let’s answer the question…

How do we use AI to repair your Mercedes?

Here’s what AI can’t do:

It can’t hear that rattle that only happens when the engine’s cold.

It can’t feel a vibration through the steering wheel.

It can’t interpret the customer's explanation of something sounding like a 'choking duck'!

It can’t reassure a worried customer who’s about to drive 300 miles with their family.

Years of training, experience and instinct allow us to do all this!

Do we use AI to help us?

Absolutely! It can help us find information faster, compare technical data and support the diagnostic process.

But, the final diagnosis still comes down to a qualified technician using their experience alongside specialist equipment.

That’s why investing in good technicians will always matter just as much as investing in technology, in our opinion!

What do you think? Would you trust AI to repair your car without a technician checking the work? Let us know in the comments!

What's in at MBS Exeter today?

You drop off your Mercedes, BMW, or MINI at the garage and get on with your day. Yet, in the back of your mind, you're not always sure what's actually happening to it once you hand those keys over!

Here's a small glimpse of what a normal part of a day looks like for us!

Today alone we've had a full EV service and brake fluid change on a Mercedes EQC, a Mercedes AMG in for air con, suspension work on a BMW 5 Series, and a BMW 1 Series head gasket job, all at the same time, all in the same place.

We're a bit like worker bees buzzing around and getting the jobs done, under the watchful eye of a queen bee!

We'd love your input...What kind of content would you like to see from us?

Let us know in the comments if there are any struggles with your car you'd like explained or particular things you'd like us to cover. We're here for you, our customers, not to go viral!!
