5 things you might not know about Exeter Racecourse! 🤔
1. We have centuries of racing history🕚
Horse racing has been part of Exeter’s heritage since the mid-17th century, meaning the story of racing here goes back more than 350 years!
2. The location makes for a real test 🗻
Set high on Haldon Hill, Exeter is surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside. The course’s undulating layout and uphill finish make it a challenging test for horses and jockeys.
3. A future Cheltenham Gold Cup legend won here 🐎
The legendary Best Mate, who went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times, won his first chase at Exeter. That makes the racecourse part of the story of one of jump racing’s great names.
4. Our history includes a real-life duel
In 1833, a doctor named Peter Hennis and a judge, Sir John Jeffcott, fought a duel at the racecourse after a dispute over gossip. It became known as the last duel in Devon, a rather dramatic piece of local history!
5. We’re more than just a racecourse🤩
Outside racing, Exeter’s Haldon Stand hosts events including conferences, weddings, private parties and exhibitions, so there are plenty of reasons to visit beyond raceday.
