🚐 New route just landed: Heather & Headlands — Exmoor & North Devon by camper.

England's wild little secret. Point the van north out of Exeter and you're onto Exmoor within the hour — heather moorland grazed by red deer and ponies, deep wooded combes, and some of the highest sea cliffs in the country. By night it's Europe's first Dark Sky Reserve, and the stars are something else.

Our new 6-day loop takes in pretty Dunster and its castle, the big view from Dunkery Beacon, the twin towns of Lynmouth and Lynton, the wild Valley of Rocks, three miles of surf at Woolacombe, car-free Clovelly, and the ancient Tarr Steps on the way home.

Bigger vans welcome (we've flagged the steep hills — Porlock, we're looking at you), dogs very much welcome, and free Camping & Caravanning Club membership as standard.

A lovely one to read from Paul, who took his mum away in one of our Renault campervans:

Judging by the photos, they did it properly. Roof up on a grassy pitch, kettle on the go outside, then down to the sand at Polzeath and a wander round Boscastle.

Granite tors in the morning, sandbars and sailing towns by the afternoon. Devon gives you two holidays in one, and our Dartmoor & South Devon road trip strings them together.

It's a six-day loop out of Exeter. Start at Haytor (there's a level car park right underneath, and the ice-cream van is usually there), cross the moor to Lydford Gorge, then drop down through the South Hams to Bigbury, Salcombe and Dartmouth before following the Riviera home.

We've flagged the tricky bits too. Take the lane down into Widecombe slowly in a bigger motorhome, and don't try parking in Salcombe: base up at Bolberry House Farm on the cliffs and hop on the bus or ferry.

Jane & Rory did a version of it with their young dog. Their favourite part was parking up on Dartmoor, making lunch and heading out for a walk before pottering down to the coast.

On 1 October the summer dog bans come off most of the South West's beaches.

They've been in place since the start of May on the busy ones. Bantham's main beach, the middle stretch at Seaton, plenty more besides. The big Cornish beaches that hold their ban to the end of September open up at the same time.

So if you've been waiting to take the dog away, October is about as good as it gets. Beaches with room on them, no reading signs before you let the lead off, and a sandy dog and a towel by the door when you all pile back in for the evening.

The first was left in November 2016. Since then the vans have been up to Scotland, over the Alps, down through France, and round Cornwall more times than we've kept count of.

Forty-six of those reviews mention Julian by name.

Early start for the Bank Holiday weekend!

All thirteen vans are out this bank holiday weekend. Every one of them booked, all off somewhere.

It's what these weekends are for. An extra day on the end, no rush to be back for work, a coast road and nowhere you have to be by six.

If you're reading this wishing you were doing the same — the diary opens up again from the middle of September. Worth a look before it fills up.

The Fishleigh family took Drake to the Alps for the best part of a fortnight.

"The motorhome was a joy to drive & live in. Very user friendly and comfortable, kids loved it. Bags of room and effortless on both up and down the mountains. Didn't want to hand it back!!"

Four of them, two bikes on the back, and Drake parked up at Alpe d'Huez as if it does that every week.

Four things people tell us they didn't expect to love about van life. None of them are the van.

Slow mornings with nowhere in particular to be. The kettle on with the side door open. Parking up somewhere you'd never have found from a hotel car park. And waking up able to decide where you're going that day, rather than having booked it back in February.
