The first was left in November 2016. Since then the vans have been up to Scotland, over the Alps, down through France, and round Cornwall more times than we've kept count of.

Forty-six of those reviews mention Julian by name.

All thirteen vans are out this bank holiday weekend. Every one of them booked, all off somewhere.

It's what these weekends are for. An extra day on the end, no rush to be back for work, a coast road and nowhere you have to be by six.

If you're reading this wishing you were doing the same — the diary opens up again from the middle of September. Worth a look before it fills up.

The Fishleigh family took Drake to the Alps for the best part of a fortnight.

"The motorhome was a joy to drive & live in. Very user friendly and comfortable, kids loved it. Bags of room and effortless on both up and down the mountains. Didn't want to hand it back!!"

Four of them, two bikes on the back, and Drake parked up at Alpe d'Huez as if it does that every week.

Four things people tell us they didn't expect to love about van life. None of them are the van.

Slow mornings with nowhere in particular to be. The kettle on with the side door open. Parking up somewhere you'd never have found from a hotel car park. And waking up able to decide where you're going that day, rather than having booked it back in February.

"First class service from start to finish."

Dan and his family had Baret away for a week, and this is what he told us when they got back.

The van spotless and practically brand new. A thorough walkthrough before they set off, so they felt confident with everything on board. Their own car parked in a secure locked compound while they were away. And other campers on the sites they stayed at stopping to comment on how lovely the van was.

Pick the van up in the morning, and you're watching the sun go down over the water by the evening. That's a Friday well spent.

Libby ( over on Instagram) came out with us and filmed this one in the Columbus — one of our two Renault campervans. Columbus and Magellan are near enough identical, so if one's already booked for your dates, the other does exactly the same job.

🚐 New route just landed: Tors & Tides — Dartmoor & South Devon by camper.

Two holidays in one. Point the van west out of Exeter and you're up on Dartmoor within the hour — granite tors, wild ponies, skies that go on forever. Swing south and you drop into the South Hams: tidal creeks, sailing towns and sandy bars.

Our new 6-day loop takes in Haytor and Widecombe, Lydford Gorge and Tavistock, Saltram and Plymouth's Barbican, the sea-tractor to Burgh Island, chic Salcombe, Slapton Sands and Dartmouth — then home along the English Riviera.

The big motorhome isn't always the right answer.

If it's two of you, a smaller campervan does something the big vans can't: it goes where you actually want to go. Down the narrow lane to the cove. Into the village car park. Round the single-track bits of west Cornwall without the sharp intake of breath.

It's easier to drive if you've never driven one before. It's cheaper to run. And you'll park it in places a seven-metre motorhome has to drive past.

Columbus and Magellan — both Renault campervans — are available through August, and both are 5% off for a seven-day break with code CRESTON5 until the 28th.

We've rebuilt our Cornwall camper route from scratch — six days, nine stops, one gorgeous coastline. Ride the traffic-free Camel Trail out of Padstow, base up above St Ives Bay, chase the far west to Sennen and the cliff-carved Minack Theatre, find that impossible blue water at Kynance Cove, slow right down on the Roseland, and finish at the Eden Project on the way home.
