Hit a nasty pothole on the Fen roads around Ely? 🚙 💥 Don’t ignore it : even one hard knock can damage your tyre, wheel, suspension or alignment.

When it’s safe to do so, check for:

🔎 Bulges, cuts or cracks in the tyre
👂 New knocks, bangs or other unusual noises
〰️ Vibrations through the steering wheel
↔️ The car pulling to one side

A friendly reminder from your local garage:
🚜 Please be patient and give farm vehicles plenty of room.
↔️ Pass wide where possible.
🛣️ Only overtake when you have a clear view and it’s completely safe.
🌾 Watch out for mud on the road after field work, especially near entrances to fields.

A few simple reminders:

🍁 Slow down on corners covered with wet leaves : they can be surprisingly slick.

🦌 Take extra care at dawn and dusk, when deer are more active. If you spot one, slow down and look out for others nearby.

☀️ Reduce sun glare by keeping your windscreen clean and checking that your wipers clear the glass properly.

🚗 Check your tyre tread and pressures before temperatures drop and grip becomes more important.

Heading out on the road this September? Whether you’re a new driver or a parent helping one get started, knowing the basics of tyre safety can make every journey feel more confident. 😊

Here are four simple checks to remember:

✅ Tread depth: The legal minimum is 1.6mm.

🪙 The 20p test: Place a 20p coin into the tyre tread. If you can see the coin’s outer rim, have your tyres checked.

💨 Tyre pressure: Check the handbook or the sticker inside the driver’s door. The correct pressure helps with grip, braking and fuel use. Check when the tyres are cold for the most accurate reading.

👀 Look for damage: Bulges, cracks, cuts or anything that looks unusual should never be ignored.

👀 Keep school entrances clear and give children plenty of room to get in, out and cross safely.

Could your tyres pass the 20p test? 🪙🛞

It takes around 30 seconds:

1️⃣ Insert a 20p coin into the tread groove.

2️⃣ Check the outer edge of the coin.

If you can see the outer band, your tyre tread may be below the legal minimum of 1.6mm and should be checked by a professional.

Try it in several places around each tyre, as tread can wear unevenly. Don’t forget to check for cracks, bulges or anything else that looks unusual too.

Worn tyres aren’t worth taking a chance on. They can lead to fines of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. ⚠️

A noisy or damaged exhaust can get worse if it’s left unchecked. Look out for:

🔊 A rumbling or roaring noise
🔧 Rattling underneath the car
💨 A blowing or hissing sound
⚠️ The smell of fumes inside the car
⛽ Reduced fuel economy

If you notice fumes inside the car, stop using it and get it checked as soon as it’s safe to do so.

A cheap part-worn tyre isn’t a bargain if it puts you and your passengers at risk. ⚠️

TyreSafe enforcement operations in Norfolk and Lancashire found that 36% of the part-worn tyres checked were dangerous, with exposed cords, structural damage and poor repairs discovered.

In Lancashire, none of the tyres checked met the legal requirements.
