DervTech are a performance tuning specialists based just outside of Manchester, in the North of England. We have gained a reputation for providing top class hardware and software tuning solutions for many makes and models of diesel or petrol vehicles. We write all our remaps ourselves, in the proper way (just like the original manufacturer would have!!) and don’t use cheap copies bought from eBay

as many "tuners" do. Whether you are wanting a stage 1 tune for a totally standard car, stage 2 for a car with bolt on modifications or a stage 3 for those really bespoke cars – we can do them all! Couple this with the ability to turn off EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves) and DPF (diesel particulate filters) and enable those features such as hard cut (popcorn) rev limiters and launch control… we really are your one stop tuning shop! After years of playing with ECU’s and working on different cars, we were tuning our own, tuning our friends and then ultimately tuning friends of our friends. This is when DervTech was born!

Over the last two years we have poured absolutely everything into this business. Late nights turning into early mornings, finishing at the garage at 4am and being back for 8am, spending evenings replying to enquiries, problem solving. We’ve always believed that if someone trusts us with their car especially when they’ve travelled hundreds of miles to get here, then they deserve our full effort no matter what time the clock says.

Tuning isn’t predictable. Sometimes jobs overrun, faults appear unexpectedly or cars need more attention than planned. When someone has travelled across the country, the reality is you can’t simply say “it’s 5pm, we’re closed now, get the train home and come back tomorrow.” It’s not fair on the customer and it also impacts the following day for everyone else. So we stay, we finish the job properly and we make sure people get home.

But when that can happen any day of the week, eventually you have to ask yourself how you create any sort of work/life balance.

Between us we have five sons aged between 1 and 7 years old. Anyone with young children knows how quickly those years disappear and how important the little moments are. We realised going into 2026 that something had to change. We love what we do and we are incredibly grateful for the support the business receives, but we also knew we needed to make more time for our families too.

That’s why we made the difficult decision to temporarily stop Saturdays while we worked out a long term plan.

Moving forward we will be opening for ONE Saturday per month, running as a full working day from 8am–5pm. These slots will carry a slightly higher rate than our normal weekday pricing.

Being a small business means constantly learning, adapting and trying to do the best for both our customers and our families at the same time.

This 2024 JCW booked in with us for a few birthday treats. The owner has had a few Minis over the years and originally planned to do the usual trade in but decided this one was worth keeping long term, meaning it was up to us to make the car a little more fun!

Work carried out:
- Direnza intercooler upgrade
- MMR intake resonator delete pipe

- Supply, fitting & gapping of NGK91469 spark plugs
- Same day ECU unlock
- Custom dyno tuning

What makes these results even more impressive is the conditions the car was tuned in. Ambient dyno room temperatures were sitting around 27–32°C throughout the session. That figure is only the air temperature inside the dyno cell itself, meaning actual intake air temperatures under load would realistically have been another 10–15°C higher once heat soak from the engine bay and turbocharger is taken into account.

Despite the heat the upgraded intercooler did a fantastic job of keeping temperatures under control and allowing the car to hold power consistently throughout the pull. Without improved charge cooling, conditions like this can quickly lead to rising intake temperatures, reduced ignition timing and noticeable power drop off as the ECU starts protecting the engine.

This JCW that now feels completely different on the road. Stronger mid range, far better pull throughout the rev range and much more consistent performance even in difficult summer conditions.

On a cooler day the car would likely run a higher reading and another thing to note.. The car still has the GPF in place!

⚖ Stage 2 VS Stage 2 ⚖

This car came to us already running a Stage 2 tune from another tuner. On paper the figures looked respectable at 294.5HP and 438NM but numbers alone never tell the full story.

Once we got the car on the dyno and started analysing the datalogs, it was clear the previous calibration was heavily torque loaded very early in the rev range. While this can create an aggressive shove low down and make the car feel fast initially, it also brings several downsides.

The biggest issue was how quickly the power and torque dropped away afterwards. After the initial spike, the car struggled to carry performance through the mid range and upper RPMs. In the real world this often creates a car that feels exciting for a moment but quickly runs out of breath higher up the rev range.

Running excessive low end torque can also place unnecessary strain on components including engine mounts, gearbox clutches, driveshafts, the turbocharger and even traction systems.

Our approach was completely different.

Rather than chasing one big torque spike, we recalibrated both the ECU and TCU to deliver smoother, more progressive power while allowing the car to carry torque and horsepower properly towards redline.

The end result wasn’t just more peak power but a car that pulls harder, more consistently and is far nicer to drive throughout the entire rev range.

That’s the difference between simply tuning a car and properly calibrating one.

This LCI JCW came in still running the factory GPF and absolutely exceeded expectations on the dyno.

Generally on this setup with the GPF still in place we’d normally expect to see somewhere in the region of 290–310HP depending on fuel quality, condition and how the car responds to calibration. So to see this one produce over 320HP whilst retaining the factory GPF is a fantastic result and a real credit to how healthy the car was mechanically.

Alongside the engine tuning we also carried out gearbox tuning to help improve the overall driving experience and make the most of the additional power.

The gearbox calibration included:
• Faster shift speeds for a more responsive feel
• Improved shift strategy to keep the car in the power band longer
• Sharper throttle response
• Increased gear holding in performance driving situations
• Adjustments to factory torque management limitations

Resulting in a car that not only makes impressive power but also feels considerably more refined and aggressive on the road. The shifts are quicker, the power delivery is smoother and the car feels far more eager throughout the rev range.

This customer originally booked in with us for a Stage 1 custom tune, however before his appointment he dropped us an email with a video attached of a strange noise he was concerned about. Wanting to make sure everything was healthy before tuning, he asked us to check the car over first.

From the video alone it was pretty evident to us that the turbo didn’t sound healthy at all. Rather than waiting until the original booking date, we moved the appointment forward so we could inspect the car properly and confirm exactly what was going on.
Sure enough, once the car was in the workshop we confirmed the turbocharger had failed. The turbine bearing had let go, causing excessive axial play in the turbine shaft which explained the noise and poor condition of the unit.

After discussing a few options with the customer, Ben recommended upgrading to a GP3 turbo / Garrett MGT22z . With the car already fitted with an Eventuri intake and Forge hard pipe, it made sense to build a solid package around it.

As most know the factory intercoolers aren't the best so we also supplied and fitted a Direnza intercooler to help keep intake temperatures under control.

While carrying out the work we also found the upper engine mount had failed, another very common issue on the F56 platform. To sort this properly we fitted a GP3 engine mount along with a Powerflex lower mount bush to help improve stability and drivability under load.

Once everything was fitted, checked over and we were happy the car was finally mechanically sound, it was time to strap it down to the dyno and see what it could do.

The car responded really well and I'm sure will be enjoyed thoroughly on the customers planned road trip!

Realised we have a few cars from before the new dyno was fitted that we missed doing posts on! This JCW came in already fitted with some supporting hardware but looking for more out of the car.

Work carried out:
- Engine & gearbox tuning
- Supply & fitting of Scorpion GPF delete pipe
- Gearbox service
- Engine service with spark plugs

The car already had:
- RamAir intake
- Direnza intercooler
- MMX chargepipes
- Forge Motorsport intake hardpipe

While carrying out checks we also noticed the upper engine mount had excessive play in it, which is something we see regularly on the F56 platform. To sort this properly we replaced it with a GP3 engine mount and fitted a Powerflex lower bush to help keep everything tighter under load and improve drivetrain movement.

Once serviced, checked over and mechanically happy we moved onto the tuning.

A huge gain throughout the entire rev range and a completely different car to drive. The gearbox calibration alongside the engine tuning really helps transform how they deliver power, making them feel sharper, faster and much more responsive both on the road and under full load.

The owner of this JCW actually reached out to us before he’d even collected the car. From the start the plan was to go all in with full Stage 2 hardware and aim for around the 320HP mark.

We talked through a full package, provided a quote and also advised on a few maintenance points to keep an eye on when collecting the car.

After picking it up and spending the weekend driving it the customer quickly realised just how capable these cars already are from factory. For a small hatchback they’ve got plenty of punch standard and it completely changed the plan.

Instead of jumping straight into hardware, the decision was made to keep the car stock and go for a Stage 1 custom tune first.

👋🏼 Another Induction Kit Bites The Dust 👋🏼

Not all modifications improve performance and this car was a perfect example of that.

This F56 JCW came to us already fitted with an upgraded downpipe, intercooler and aftermarket intake, alongside plans for new NGK spark plugs, engine tuning and gearbox tuning. On paper it sounded like a solid setup but once we got the car on the dyno and started analysing the data, something immediately stood out.

Fuel trims were adding over 12% fuel.

For those that don’t know, fuel trims are the ECU constantly correcting fueling to try and achieve the air/fuel targets it expects. Seeing corrections that high before tuning is a clear sign that something isn’t quite right. Rather than ignoring it and pushing ahead, we started looking into why.

The intake was the first thing that caught our attention.

Modern ECUs are incredibly sensitive and the tolerances they work within are far tighter than most people realise. Something as simple as the design of an intake pipe, MAF housing or airflow path can completely change how the ECU interprets incoming air. While induction kits often sound great, they don’t always work well with the calibration strategy these engines rely on.

We suggested swapping back to a genuine stock airbox to test the theory, the customer went away and came back a few days later with the stock airbox and the difference was immediate. Straight away the car picked up an extra 20Nm simply from refitting the OEM airbox, before we had even started tuning it.

More importantly fuel trims dropped from over 12% correction down to a maximum of just 1.6%, putting the car back into a far healthier operating window ready for calibration.

Once everything was stable we carried out the custom engine and gearbox tune, ending up with a car that not only made strong power but drove properly and consistently too.

Sometimes the best modification isn’t the loudest or most expensive option. BMW and MINI spend millions developing these factory airboxes and time and time again, we find they outperform a lot of aftermarket alternatives on the road and on the dyno.

This 2023 JCW came to us for a full package build aimed at improving not just the power, but the overall driving experience of the car. Modern MINIs respond incredibly well to the right supporting modifications, and this one is a perfect example of how a well thought out setup completely transforms the way the car feels on the road.

To get started we carried out our Same Day ECU Unlock, allowing us to custom tune the factory ECU without the long wait times traditionally associated with newer locked vehicles. From there the car received a carefully selected combination of hardware upgrades designed to improve airflow, reliability, drivetrain stability and overall drivability.

The work carried out included:
- Same Day ECU Unlock
- Direnza intercooler
- Scorpion GPF delete pipe
- MMR intake resonator delete pipe
- MMR lowering springs
- ITG panel filter
- Oil & filter service
- NGK91469 spark plugs fitted and gapped correctly
- GP3 engine mount
- Powerflex lower large bush

The upgraded intercooler helps keep intake temperatures under control, especially once boost and load are increased, while the GPF delete pipe and intake modifications allow the engine to breathe far more efficiently. We also fitted fresh NGK91469 spark plugs, correctly gapped for tuned applications, helping maintain a strong and reliable spark under higher cylinder pressures.

Outside of the power side of things, the GP3 engine mount and Powerflex bush dramatically improve drivetrain stability and reduce excessive engine movement, giving the car a much sharper and more connected feel during hard acceleration and gear changes. Combined with the lowering springs, the whole car feels tighter, more responsive and far more confidence inspiring to drive.

Sometimes it’s the combination of smaller upgrades working together that makes the biggest difference, and this JCW is exactly that.

The customer reported back after the drive home:

“Every single upgrade has made a significant difference to the way the car drives and feels and I couldn’t be happier.”
