🖐 Worth the wait 🖐

This 2024 JCW got in touch with us back in January looking to take advantage of our same day ECU unlock. Unfortunately at the time we had to postpone this and took a list of people wanting the service. When the time was right we reached out to get the customer booked in.

We fitted a selection of supporting modifications including a Direnza intercooler, MMR intake resonator delete pipe, ITG panel filter and a fresh set of NGK91469 spark plugs gapped to 0.5mm.

Once everything was fitted we carried out the unlock on the ECU and strapped the car on the dyno.

The ambient temperate in the dyno was sitting around 32 degree, this has a significant impact. A hot day can easily cost 10-20HP compared to a cool day. We've seen cars return on cooler days and gain power without a single change to the calibration simply because the intake temperatures are under control.

The calibration hasn't suddenly become worse because it made less power at 32°C. In many cases, the car is simply working harder to overcome the heat and the ECU is doing its job by protecting the engine.

That's one of the reasons we often encourage customers to look at the entire graph and how the car performs on the road, rather than focusing solely on the peak horsepower figure. A safe repeatable 300HP on a 32°C day is often more impressive than a 310HP dyno figure achieved in perfect winter conditions.

🚀 THE 300HP CLUB 🚀

Some customers arrive as strangers. Others feel like part of the journey long before they ever even use our services. This customer belonged firmly in the second category.

Before we'd even met we already knew the name. A familiar face in the comments, a regular supporter of our posts and someone who has followed what we do for a long time. There's something really special about finally meeting people like that in person. People who genuinely enjoy following the journey, take pride in maintaining their car properly and arrive just as enthusiastic in real life as they are online.

In fact this customer is the reason our 300HP Club stickers now exist. A casual comment in passing was all it took for us to think "That's actually a brilliant idea." A few days later, they became a reality.

The JCW arrived in great shape and already had some carefully chosen modifications fitted:

• Turbo Intake Hard Pipe
• Forge Intercooler
• Resonator & GPF Delete
• NGK Spark Plugs

With everything checked over it was time to get the car strapped down and start the custom calibration process.

As expected the supporting modifications gave us a solid foundation to work from and the results certainly didn't disappoint.

That's a gain of nearly 80HP and over 120NM of torque, transforming the way this manual JCW drives while maintaining the smooth, predictable power delivery we always aim for.

😲 109K / 1.5L Cooper 😲

This 1.5 Cooper first got in touch with us over a year ago. At the time the car was on 96,000 miles and the owner had seen us talking about some of the maintenance items we regularly recommend on the Pre LCI cars. The timing chain and clutch had already been replaced at 61,000 miles but with the mileage steadily climbing he wanted to make sure the car stayed in good health before looking at any performance upgrades.

Now 1 year later the car arrived with 109,000 miles on the clock ready for a bit of preventative maintenance and a custom tune.

Work carried out:
- Spark plugs
- Ignition coils
- Injectors
- Oil and filter service
- Custom tuning

The car arrived fitted with a tuning box, we like to run the car on the dyno exactly as it so we can see what it's actually doing.

The tuning box had given a small increase over stock but the custom calibration completely transformed the car. The biggest difference wasn't just the peak numbers, it was how the power and torque were delivered throughout the rev range.

For a car that's now covered 109,000 miles, these little 1.5 engines continue to impress us when they've been looked after properly. A lot of people assume six figure mileage means the end is near but time and time again we see them still going strong!

The owner later shared the results on the F56 page and the amount of attention the post received was brilliant to see. There were plenty of comments from people surprised by what these 1.5's can do.

A well maintained car, a sensible maintenance plan and a proper custom tune. Sometimes that's all it takes.

The customer left happy, the car drove better than ever and hopefully it'll continue racking up the miles for many years to come.

👑 1.2 Mini ONE 👑

Back in January this little 1.2 came in for a stage 1 tune.

Fast forward a few months and the customer made the trip back to see us for an engine health check on the dyno.

Once it was strapped down and the health check runs completed, everything looked exactly as it should. Fueling was healthy, ignition performance was good and there were no signs of any underlying mechanical concerns.

For many companies that would have been the end of the appointment. However Chris being Chris couldn't resist digging a little deeper.

Rather than simply printing the dyno graph and sending the customer on their way, the afternoon became a deep dive into the calibration itself. We don't often have the 1.2L variant come into us so opportunities to further explore the platform and learn more about how these engines respond to different strategies are incredibly valuable from both a development and educational perspective.

Datalogs were reviewed, software was analysed and different areas of the calibration were investigated. What started as a routine health check quickly became a development session, allowing us to gather more information on the platform whilst also seeing if there was any additional performance left on the table.

An additional 11HP and over 12NM from a car that was already tuned may not sound like a huge number on paper but when you're working with a 1.2L engine those gains are extremely respectable. More importantly the improvements weren't achieved through chasing a peak figure. The revised calibration produced stronger torque lower in the rev range, improved mid range performance and carried power more effectively throughout the RPM range.

The green graph tells the story perfectly. More torque, more power and a broader usable powerband making the car feel stronger and more responsive in everyday driving.

And before anyone asks, we didn't charge extra for any of this. The customer booked an engine health check and that's what they paid for. The additional time spent reviewing logs, analysing the software, refining the calibration and carrying out further dyno testing was simply because we wanted to. Sometimes the opportunity to learn more about a platform and improve an already good result is worth far more to us than watching the clock.

It's days like this that remind us why we love what we do. Every car teaches us something, every calibration can be improved and every opportunity to learn helps us deliver better results for future customers.

🔒 CLOSED TODAY 🔒

Today the workshop is closed while we take a well earned day to ourselves.

Over the last two weeks we’ve worked 14 days with just a single day off in between. Running a busy workshop, managing bookings, answering enquiries, carrying out tuning and workshop work, and keeping everything moving behind the scenes means the days can quickly turn into weeks without a break.

As much as we love what we do, it’s important that we occasionally step away, recharge and spend some time with our families and for ourselves. Taking the odd day to reset allows us to come back refreshed and continue providing the level of service that our customers expect.

During this time our phones will not be monitored and we will not be answering calls, messages, emails or social media enquiries.

All messages will be replied to on Thursday when we return.

🥤 MINIS & MILKSHAKES THIS SUNDAY 🥤
