Another Nissan GT R R35 in for a full transmission removal, strip and inspection after the vehicle presented with a fluid leak and drivability concerns
The gearbox was removed following identification of a leak between the mid plate and the differential section, which required full disassembly to correctly address and reseal
Once stripped, several key issues were identified:
The ETS AWD unit was found to be significantly out of specification, with preload measured at over 50Nm. This is well outside correct operating range and can lead to binding and incorrect torque distribution. The unit was fully stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with new friction components, then correctly reshimmmed to achieve proper preload and restore correct operation
Main clutch clearances were found to be excessive. This would result in poor clutch engagement and inconsistent shifting. The clutch packs were stripped, measured and reshimmmed back to correct specification
During inspection, the A and B clutch piston seals were found to be damaged, which would cause internal pressure loss and further affect clutch performance. These were replaced to restore proper hydraulic function
The transmission oil pump was fully stripped and cleaned, with internal components inspected and the internal filter replaced. All associated solenoids were tested to ensure correct operation
The valve body was also fully stripped, cleaned and tested, with all solenoids checked to confirm correct response and functionality
The transmission casing was cleaned throughout, and the mid plate was properly resealed to eliminate the original leak between the gearbox and differential section
Following reassembly, the system was refilled with fresh fluid and all components verified for correct operation
This is a good example of why fluid leaks or early signs of transmission issues should not be ignored, as underlying faults are often present and can lead to more serious damage if left unchecked
If your GT R is showing signs of leaks, harsh shifting or drivetrain issues, it is always worth investigating properly before it turns into a bigger problem
