I’m not a big fan of social media and I don’t post often.

I have been genuinely amazed at the amount of people in the Audi B5 community who have been in touch, after seeing my posts about selling parts of my track build.

It would seem my desire to teach myself skills I never had, build and run the car - even on much fewer occasions than I had ever hoped to, inspired some others and what they were up to.

I’ve been genuinely blown away by the number of people that have come forward with comments such as “can’t believe it, my favourite B5 build” and “such a shame”, etc.

The last year has been a massive rollercoaster for me.

At the beginning of the year I changed my career for something that is very interesting, that is keeping me very occupied but more importantly, will give me a much better foundation to build this hobby on later in life financially.

I’ve loved every minute of any interaction I’ve had with any one who expressed any interest in the project and what I was up to. So I’d like to say thank you to anyone and everyone that reached out, for all the comments and discussions over the years.

Reflecting upon it now, that was as important a part of the experience as building the car itself.

Changing career means changing priorities - so the car has taken a bit of a back seat over the last 6 or so months.

I have attempted 3D scanning a couple of years back with an Xbox Kinect camera and some basic software.

I decided to have another go with some proper kit this time.

This scan is the result of a quick test, with no tracking markers or dulling spray on the front end of the car, that I did to test the Einstar scanner worked okay post delivery.

The detail is extremely good for the price of the scanner, with even the moulded writing on the tyre wall visible in the scan cloud point data.

I intend to scan the entire car and spend some time in the second half of this year designing and manufacturing parts to take the car to the next level.

Something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time, a definite tick off the bucket list.

Sarah gifted me a flying lesson last Christmas, it took me a while to get round to booking it, it got called off once due to bad weather, then it took me ages to book it again… but in the end I got around to it.

With minutes down the road it was the obvious choice. The instructor Dan was excellent, a very easy going character that for me helped me feel confident in a light aircraft for the first time.

It’s amazing how much the winds push a small aircraft about, once I was given the controls (bearing in mind as an absolute novice I was only given the yoke, with Dan keeping control of the throttle and the rudder) I had to constantly react to the movement of the plane in the winds. There were points where it took a lot of concentration and I almost forgot a few times I was a few thousand feet in the air and in control of a plane 😂.

If anyone has ever had the slightest thought they’d like to have a go, I urge you to do it. It was an awesome experience and I will be back to do more.

During free practice on Friday we had a car issue that meant a replacement needed to be found for and to run in the race on Saturday.

A McLaren 720S GT3 was secured and what a car it is!

The car arrived at the circuit in the early hours of Saturday morning and after a very early start to unload and familiarise ourselves with the car and kit, we went into the free practice/qualifying session. Ameerh put the car on the front row with an impressive session, given it was his first experience in GT3 machinery.

With epic drives from both drivers, some good luck and good strategy, we kept that 2nd place on the podium.

This is the first time Breakell have run a modern GT3 car and the team’s experience running classic LMP cars meant we were quickly able to adapt to running the McLaren. The team that supplied the car were surprised and complimented us in our abilities to run the car and service it during our pit stops.

The team is quickly growing a reputation for running some incredible machinery, modern or classic and has the kit, people and skills to compete with in many different series of this level.

I haven’t posted much lately.

Most of my time lately has been taken up working trackside with - something that is very enjoyable and rewarding. Working with a mixture of GT and classic endurance racing cars is incredible.

A few months ago I made the decision to stop taking on customer work, with a view to returning workshop activity almost purely to personal projects.

The downside of this is that having such a large, well presented workshop is a totally excessive expense and I’ve now moved to a smaller workspace.

With the unit emptied, there was only one thing left to do…

This isn’t the end, Tempest becomes more about my journey with the S4 and other racing cars I get involved with in the future.

I hope that’s of interest to some of you that have followed on the journey to date.

A great gift from my folks for my birthday.

If you’ve never used one of these RaceSense gauges for tyre pressure/temperature logging, it will change your life.

The 4wheel mode allows you to take the pressure and the inner/mid/outer temperatures of all four wheels without having to put pen to paper. The starting wheel and the direction of measurements is selectable through the setup menu.

Once you’ve made your measurements you can NFC the data to the app on your smart phone, which then records the location from GPS and weather conditions.

I would like to give a huge shout out to and for inviting me to at Goodwood and supplying me with a wrist band for some track time.

The CSF radiator I run in the car is hands down the best performing radiator on the market that’s a direct fit for the B5 S4.

On track, engine coolant temperatures are rock solid between 88-90 degrees centigrade - exactly where I want them to be.

It was great to meet the team from Regal and Ravi of CSF, if anyone needs any cooling products for their car I can vouch for the quality of CSF’s products and the service you’ll receive from the team at Regal.

Templating for closure panels on the rear end of the B5 race car build.

With the aero package I’m developing I want to try and stop as much air as possible getting on top of the diffuser, so these panels will help prevent that.

These will be made from aluminium sheet at first, with carbon fibre versions coming later on.

Added a dry break connector to our B5 track car for fuelling out.

With the fuel cell pretty inaccessible in the rear of the car and no level sender fitted, this will allow us to pump the fuel out of the cell and measure the consumption when on track.

It’s also convenient for taking the fuel out of the car when it’s not in use.
