Today was all about growth! After an insightful day of coaching development training, Iโ€™m looking forward to introducing some brilliant new strategies to my learners.
โ€‹

Todayโ€™s instructors on our Coaching & ADI/PDI development course were Marie MacLeod and Stephanie Ritchie. Both thoroughly enjoyed todayโ€™s session in car and out taking away some new found knowledge with them. Was a really enjoyable day again with some brilliant ideas from both girls.

This is what Stephanie said after todayโ€™s course: A huge THANK YOU to Steven for an amazing Coaching ADI Development course! ๐ŸŽ‰

The experience altogether was both inspiring and practical. I've picked up new tools, fresh perspectives and plenty of ideas to take forward into my lessons.

Thanks for creating a space where we could learn, grow and occasionally have our brains stretched in the best possible way! ๐Ÿš€

Marie has also commented:

I have just completed a training course with Steven, focusing on coaching techniques and frameworks to enhance my own practice and better support my learners. I found the experience incredibly beneficial, engaging, and above all, fun. I would certainly be interested in attending further courses led by Steven, and highly recommend him to anyone seeking impactful professional development.

โ€‹How you position your stationary vehicle has a massive impact on local community safety. Every time you leave your car on a residential street, near a junction, or outside a shop, you are entirely responsible for ensuring your vehicle does not block vital access routes. Neglecting proper positioning drastically compromises pedestrian safety, restricts the movement of emergency services, and puts vulnerable road users at serious risk.

Responsible parking demands only a moment of consideration but delivers extensive community benefits:
โœจ Nationwide statutory prohibitions enforce strict boundary limits and heavily penalise inconsiderate street positioning. Leaving any wheels on the footway is now strictly illegal across Scotland, whilst double parking or blocking tactile crossing points creates a dangerous obstacle course that forces wheelchair users and prams into live traffic lanes. Monitor your surroundings carefully before switching off the engine, ensuring your tyres remain firmly on the tarmac without encroaching onto pedestrian walkways.
โœจ Clear space awareness is crucial for maintaining public accessibility and protecting municipal infrastructure from costly structural degradation. Whilst local authorities may mark rare, specific streets where partial mounting is legally tolerated, your structural vehicle weight shatters paving slabs long before enforcement teams step in. An easy way to avoid penalties is checking local signage; look out for official exemption notices, and if none are present, assume your vehicle will attract a costly penalty charge.
โœจ Vigilant mirror checks can identify passing hazards before you open your doors into oncoming commuter traffic. Regularly scan your blind spots to look for passing cyclists, delivery drivers, hidden micro-scooters, or rushing school children who might suddenly appear alongside your chassis. If you struggle to find an appropriate space, or notice the roadway narrowing significantly whilst choosing a spot, it is vital to keep moving until you locate a safe, legal parking bay.

Before stepping away from your driver's seat on any busy public road, make it a habit to do a quick visual check of your distance from the kerbline. By keeping the footways entirely clear and securing your vehicle considerately, you protect pedestrians whilst avoiding a hefty ยฃ100 fine and keeping our streets accessible.

Navigating heavily congested gridlock demands an immense amount of concentration, yet handling stop-start queues frequently prompts motorists to adopt highly counterproductive driving habits. Coasting forward without a gear engaged might seem like an effortless way to glide through traffic, but this practice actually compromises both vehicle longevity and personal safety.

Mastering proper transmission management during dense hold-ups is your definitive barrier against mechanical damage and sudden hazards:
โœจ Neutral completely disconnects your engine from the driven wheels, leaving you entirely without throttle response when moving. Should an emergency vehicle suddenly require passage, or a distracted driver fail to slow down behind you, you lose the vital seconds needed to accelerate clear of danger.
โœจ Constantly shifting back and forth between first gear and neutral whilst rolling places immense, unnecessary stress on your transmission. This repetitive cycling accelerates wear on your gear linkage and synchronisers, which are engineered for smooth transitions rather than continuous, low-speed toggling.
โœจ The most efficient approach involves maintaining first gear for brief crawls, utilising precise biting-point control to govern your speed smoothly without riding the clutch excessively. If the tailback brings you to a definitive halt for more than a few moments, secure the vehicle with the handbrake and select neutral then.

Before heading out into peak-time rushes, always remember that keeping your car fully under control means keeping it in gear. By ditching outdated internet advice and prioritising defensive driving habits, you safeguard your gearbox whilst ensuring you can react instantly to the unpredictable road ahead.

It is easy to assume you know how to stop in a crisis, but executing a sudden emergency stop is one of the most demanding situations you will face behind the wheel. When a hazard unexpectedly materialises or a vehicle ahead drops its speed instantly, your safety depends entirely on maximizing your car's stopping power. Hesitating or mishandling the controls compromises your reaction distance, increases collision risks, and places everyone in extreme danger.

Mastering this vital manoeuvre requires understanding your vehicle's technology to achieve maximum deceleration:
โœจ The Antilock Braking System (ABS) prevents your wheels from locking, allowing you to maintain steering control whilst avoiding an obstacle. Stomping hard on the pedal triggers rapid automated brake pulsing to maintain traction, whilst lifting your foot or pumping the pedal manually bypasses this lifesaver and causes a dangerous skid. Trust the technology by keeping firm, continuous pressure on the pedal, even if you feel a violent shuddering sensation underfoot.
โœจ Proper physical preparation is essential for hitting the pedal with maximum velocity, ensuring you stop within the shortest possible distance. Whilst modern cars assist with braking force, your personal reaction time dictates your overall stopping distance before the mechanical components even engage. Adjust your seating posture so your knees remain slightly bent when pressing the pedals fully, ensuring you can apply maximum physical leverage instantly.
โœจ Comprehensive awareness helps you anticipate hazards well before they require a panicked response. Regularly scan the road far ahead for brake lights, erratic pedestrians, changing signals, or hidden junctions. If you must stop suddenly, or feel the vehicle sliding whilst steering around danger, keep your eyes fixed on your escape route rather than the hazard itself.

Before starting any journey, check that your dashboard warning lights illuminate and extinguish correctly, confirming your safety electronics are active. By understanding how to manage emergency situations and staying alert, you protect your passengers whilst keeping your driving standard exceptionally high and your journeys secure.
Remember, 'only a fool breaks the two-second rule' so keep your following distance at all times. Two-seconds in optimum conditions, four-seconds in wet conditions, and 20-seconds in icy conditions.

It is easy to take your tyres for granted, but those four patches of rubber are the only things connecting your vehicle to the tarmac. Every time you accelerate, steer, or step on the brakes, you are relying entirely on the condition of your tyres to keep you in control. Neglecting basic upkeep drastically compromises your vehicle's performance, increases your fuel consumption, and puts everyone in the vehicle at serious risk.

Proactive maintenance takes less than ten minutes but yields massive safety benefits:
โœจ Incorrect inflation pressures cause uneven wear and unpredictable handling. Under-inflated tyres flex excessively, creating dangerous heat buildup that can lead to high-speed blowouts, whilst over-inflation reduces the size of your contact patch, severely limiting your grip. Check your pressures regularly using a reliable gauge when the rubber is cold, referencing the figures on your door pillar or inside the fuel flap.
โœจ Adequate tread depth is crucial for shifting water and preventing your car from sliding in the wet. Whilst the legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, braking distances deteriorate significantly long before that point. An easy way to monitor this is the 20p test; insert the coin into the main grooves, and if the outer band is visible, your tyres are likely approaching the safety danger zone.
โœจ Visual inspections can catch structural damage before it causes an emergency on the road. Regularly run your eyes over the sidewalls to check for unusual bulges, cracks, embedded stones, or deep cuts caused by hitting potholes and kerbs. If you spot anything unusual, or notice the car pulling to one side whilst driving, it is vital to have a professional inspect your alignment and tracking.

Before embarking on your next long trip, make it a habit to do a quick walk-around inspection of all four corners, including the spare if you carry one. By keeping your rubber in peak condition and driving defensively, you protect yourself whilst keeping your running costs down and your journeys smooth.

โ€‹Whether you are commuting through busy city centres or enjoying a weekend drive in the countryside, you are bound to encounter cyclists. Because bike riders have very little protection compared to those inside a car, they rely heavily on motorists giving them the room they need. A minor misjudgement or a rushed overtake can have devastating consequences, making patience your most valuable asset.

โ€‹Giving cyclists adequate space isn't just a legal requirement; it is a vital part of defensive driving:
โœจ Remember that a cyclist's path is rarely a perfectly straight line. They frequently have to navigate uneven tarmac, hidden potholes, slippery drain covers, and sudden gusts of wind. To stay upright, they often need to move out into the lane, so never assume they will stay glued to the kerb.
โœจ Pay close attention to their body language and road position. A cyclist looking over their right shoulder is usually preparing to turn or move out to avoid an obstacle. Furthermore, riders often take up central position in the lane at junctions or narrow roundabouts to ensure they are visible to traffic, this is a deliberate safety tactic, not an attempt to block you.
โœจ When the opportunity to pass arises, treat the bicycle exactly as you would another car. Wait for a clear, safe view of the road ahead, drop your speed, and pull entirely into the opposite lane to overtake. Giving them at least 1.5 metres of clearance ensures that even an unexpected gust of wind won't cause a collision.

โ€‹By staying alert and treating others with courtesy, you protect yourself whilst ensuring everyone gets home safely.

Today marks the rollout of the final DVSA booking reform, and it changes how test centre swaps work.

The days of booking a test slot far away and swapping it for a local one later are officially over. From today, you can only move your booking to one of the three test centres closest to your original choice.

New changes to how you book and manage your practical driving test are coming into effect. The DVSA is introducing these measures to make the system fairer for everyone and to stop the reselling of test slots by third parties.

โ€‹If you are currently learning to drive, please take note of these three key dates:
โœจ31-Mar-26, The number of times you can change a test booking will be reduced from six down to two.
โœจ12-May-26, It will be a criminal offence for anyone other than the learner to book or manage a test. This includes driving instructors and third-party apps (Testi, TestShift, etc.).
โœจ09-Jun-26, You will only be able to move your test to the three closest alternative centres. If you are booked in East Kilbride, you can only switch to another East Kilbride date or move your test to Hamilton, Baillieston, or Airdrie.

A change is defined as altering the date, the time, or the test centre. It also includes swapping your slot with another learner.

Only book your test when you are truly ready to pass, whilst ensuring you choose a location you genuinely intend to use. If you need to cancel, remember to give at least 10 full working days' notice to receive a full refund.
