Ocean Coats has carried out a refit to Cowes Sea Cadets Cheverton Champ. Director Robert Walker said, ‘I realised I had a good start in my boat handling skills because I was in the Sea Cadets. I noticed that T.S. Osbourn’s Champ was starting to look tired, so I decided to rally the troops and give the champ a refit’. Rob joined the Sea Cadets back in 1998. The Cadets taught him discipline and seamanship skills. He organised a group of volunteers from Ocean Coats, Signpost Express, Cowes Canvas, and the staff from T.S. Osbourne followed his lead. The Champ was re-antifouled, the woodwork cleaned up and treated, gel repairs carried out, and a full deep clean. The boat is looking like new. The boat was due her annual refit by the Royal Navy and due to the renovation, they focused on the engine, carrying out a full service. The refit allowed Rob to give back to the Sea cadets, and during his spare time, he volunteers to help with boating and maintenance. Rob said, ‘Volunteering for the Sea Cadets is very important and there is lots of roles you can do, there is always maintenance to do with the boats and the building and if you are really keen you can volunteer to teach cadets. If you can do regular bits here and there it helps to keep the ship running’. Ocean Coats would like to thank everyone that got involved and we look forward to seeing the Sea Cadets back on the water in 2026.

If someone was to say to you how do you fancy hand painting a boat on a raft with alligators, what would you say?!

Well, we said yes!

For the past three weeks we have been in Savannah Georgia, US. We have been fixing the paintwork on Thalia a 48.5m super yacht. The repairs where carried out using Awlgrip G-line with a roll and tip method. Considering we were outside, with temperature, damp, flies, weather and alligators, the job went very well!

Tuaq returned to her home boatyard to celebrate how pretty she is. We were very proud to have a happy customer that wanted to share his happiness with us. Bumped into a friend in Waitrose buying bbq bits and organised a last minute invite to the East Cowes Shanty. These guys are talented singers and they really brought the boatyard to life!

Damage, what damage?!

Was great to be working back in Cowes Boatyard working on MV Lysander. Lysander was painted in an Awlcraft system in Midnight Blue. It's great to show the capabilities of Awlcraft and the skills of our incredible painter Robert Walker.

Well this was something different!

Ocean Coats got to work on a project on behalf of Redheads & Roberts Ltd this fantastic Landrover Defender needed some paintwork before being sent to the sign writers. There was corrosion in the side doors and one of the panels.

We ground back, primed, filled faired and top coated.

It was a pleasure to have one of our old refit projects back in for further maintenance 4 years later!
Tuaq came in for her annual lift, wash and antifoul. As well as all of the varnish on the gunnel, bow sprit, handrails and within the cockpit was stripped, cleaned up, treated and re-varnished in an Epifanes system. We also carried out timber repairs to the gunnel, replaced caulking, fastenings and plugs, and carried out paint repairs to the hull and hatch, finishing off with cleaning up and treating the cockpit seats with Epifanes Teak-O-Bello.

The work carried out on Tuaq was a fantastic opportunity for our apprentice Riley (17) learning new woodworking skills, the removal, cutting, fitting and finishing of the plugs in the gunnel.

It's great to support visiting boats to Cowes. Temeraire has been purchased from Fountaine Pajot in France by a lovely American couple. All visiting boats are welcome and we like to provide our services!
