Hello everyone. Here is an update published by the DVSA about changes to the driving test.

We’re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. 🚗

You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.

As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.

As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:

✅ reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
✅ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
✅ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They won’t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.

It is to be hoped that other changes designed to make test booking more straightforward will take effect as quickly as possible into 2026.

A really good drive from Jay this morning saw him pass his driving test, a result that was well deserved after lots of resilience and hard work. I know it won't take long for you to be really comfortable driving on your own. Celebrating Elisa's success this afternoon with a zero faults pass of her driving test. It's a result that was richly deserved and wholly fitting for her driving abilities. Elisa, this should do wonders for your confidence and self-belief, as it proves your ability to take on new challenges successfully. Have a great summer volunteering overseas, before starting the next phase of shaping your career at university. Your future is very bright.

What a brilliant day for Harrison with the first time pass of his driving test. Harrison, you peaked at exactly the right time by delivering a very high standard drive. I'm so proud of you, as you should be of yourself. Now you can truly enjoy your own car and get used to driving it without assistance. Thanks to your parents for getting out in the car with you for the extra invaluable practice that this gave you. Best wishes for all that awaits you in the future.

Her elation said so much about how much it meant! A first time pass for Jade this morning after she just about managed to keep the nerves under control was a terrific outcome after a lot of hard work. Jade, you gave learning to drive everything that you had, and you received the reward for that this morning. Enjoy the freedom that this brings you.
