Our Bottlenose on the East coast of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 are the biggest variant in the world 🌍 growing up to 4 metres long and 600kg. When one of these beauties launches 🚀 itself out of the water next to you it’s a jaw dropping sight.

What a place to call work.

This shot I think really captures Broughty Ferry Castle and the little harbour where so many of our SaltDog adventures begin.

It’s easy to take familiar sights for granted, but every now and then a photograph like this reminds me just how lucky I am to work here.

Centuries of maritime history, a beautiful wee harbour and the River Tay stretching out towards the North Sea. Add in the dolphins, seals and incredible wildlife we get to share it with and I reckon I’ve got one of the best offices in Scotland.

Even on the days when the weather does its best to convince me otherwise! 😂

One of the constant background sounds of my summer on the Tay is the unmistakable call of the Sandwich tern. ❤️

That loud, rasping, almost squeaky call has accompanied me for thousands of miles on the water. Often you hear them before you see them, usually hovering above the water before plunging headfirst after a fish.

They’ve been with us all summer, particularly around Abertay Sands and Tentsmuir but now it’s time for them to head south.

Many will travel thousands of miles to spend our winter along the African coast, in countries including Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Ghana. Some will travel even further, reaching Namibia and South Africa.

Quite an incredible journey for a bird weighing just 250 grams or so!

As the last of them leave the Tay, it’s another reminder that our summer season is coming to an end. The estuary will be a wee bit quieter without them.
