Power loss doesn’t always mean a new turbo.

Turbo actuators, boost pipe leaks, vacuum faults and faulty sensors can all cause similar symptoms to a failed turbocharger. Replacing the turbo without confirming the fault can be an expensive mistake.

A proper diagnosis identifies the root cause first, ensuring only the faulty component is replaced and saving unnecessary costs.

🔧 At SR Automotive, we believe in diagnosing first and replacing parts second.

This Hyundai i20 failed its MOT, so the customer left the car with us while they were at work. We collected it, carried out the repairs and dropped it back off once everything was sorted. 🚗💨

🔧 Both front wishbones
🔧 Near-side inner CV boot
🔍 Washer fault diagnosed — blocked gauze found and cleared

Another reminder that proper diagnosis can save unnecessary parts and expense.

Hyundai i20 – MOT Repairs Completed

This Hyundai i20 failed its MOT and the customer got in touch with SR Automotive to get the required repairs carried out.

We collected the vehicle while the customer was at work, carried out the repairs, completed the necessary checks and dropped the vehicle back off once everything was finished. 🚗💨

The work included:

✅ Both front lower wishbones
✅ Near-side inner CV boot
✅ Diagnosis and repair of the windscreen washer fault

The washer system wasn’t spraying, so rather than assuming the pump had failed, we diagnosed the problem and found a blocked gauze/filter preventing the washer fluid from flowing correctly. 🔍

Another example of why proper fault finding matters — sometimes the solution is a simple fix rather than an unnecessary replacement part.

Customer gets their car back, repairs sorted and no need to take time off work. 🙌

🚨 Dashboard Warning Lights — What Do They Mean? 🚨

That little light on your dashboard isn’t there to annoy you… it’s your vehicle trying to tell you something.

Some warning lights are simply reminders, but others can indicate a serious fault that could leave you stranded or cause expensive damage if ignored.

From engine faults and charging issues to brake systems, overheating, ABS, DPF and safety systems — understanding what your vehicle is telling you can save time, money and stress.

🔧 Don’t just clear the light… find the cause.
Proper diagnosis is the key to fixing the problem first time.

Battery problem or alternator problem? They can show very similar symptoms.

A flat battery isn’t always the battery’s fault. If the alternator isn’t charging correctly, a new battery will soon end up flat too.

Our guide explains the key symptoms, voltage readings and quick checks to help you understand where the fault may be. Remember—diagnosis before replacing parts can save both time and money.

This VW Golf owner messaged SR Automotive with a braking issue, so we brought the workshop to them. 🚐🔧

The excessive brake dust on one rear alloy was a strong clue that the caliper had seized. We replaced the rear caliper, discs and pads, then carried out the necessary checks and road test to make sure everything was working correctly. ✅

💡 Tip: If one alloy is much dirtier than the others, don’t just assume it’s brake dust—it could be a sign of a seized caliper or sticking slider pins. Left too long, it can even damage the wheel’s finish.

Mobile Rear Brake Repair Completed – Volkswagen Golf

This 2013 Volkswagen Golf owner got in touch after noticing a braking issue, so SR Automotive brought the workshop to them. 🚐🔧

After inspecting the vehicle, we found a seized rear brake caliper, preventing the brake from releasing correctly. This had caused excessive brake dust to build up on the alloy wheel—something you’ll often notice when one wheel is much dirtier than the others.

To restore the braking system, we carried out:
✅ Rear brake caliper replacement
✅ Rear brake discs
✅ Rear brake pads

Everything was then checked, the caliper was confirmed to be operating correctly, and the vehicle was road tested to ensure the braking system was performing exactly as it should.

📸 Take a look at the alloy wheel. Heavy brake dust build-up on a single wheel can often be a sign of a seized caliper or sticking slider pins. If left unchecked, the constant contact between the pad and disc creates excessive brake dust, which can bake onto the alloy and eventually damage the wheel’s finish if it’s not cleaned off.

It’s a great example of why it’s important not to ignore the early signs. Catching the fault sooner can help prevent further damage and keep repair costs down.

Thanks for choosing SR Automotive! 🙌

HEV, PHEV, BEV or Hydrogen – what’s the difference?

As more drivers switch to alternative fuel vehicles, it’s useful to understand how each system works. Although they all reduce emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars, they achieve it in different ways.

🔵 HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
A hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. The battery charges itself through regenerative braking and the engine, so there’s no need to plug it in. They’re ideal if you want better fuel economy without changing your driving habits.

🟢 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery that can be charged from the mains. Many daily journeys can be completed using electric power alone, while the petrol engine is there for longer trips. Great if you have access to charging but still want the reassurance of a fuel tank.

🟣 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)
A fully electric vehicle is powered entirely by a high-voltage battery and electric motor. There’s no engine, exhaust or fuel tank, meaning fewer moving parts and lower servicing requirements. They produce zero tailpipe emissions but rely on charging infrastructure.

🔵 FCEV (Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle)
Hydrogen vehicles generate electricity on board by combining hydrogen with oxygen inside a fuel cell. The only emission from the exhaust is water vapour. They can be refuelled in minutes like a conventional car, but hydrogen filling stations are still very limited in the UK.

Each technology has its place. Hybrids are great for improving fuel economy, plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, battery electric vehicles provide zero-emission driving, and hydrogen could play a bigger role as refuelling infrastructure develops.
