Get ready for the driving test booking rule changes. 🚗👇

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to make 2 changes to a practical car driving test booking.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping a test between 2 learners

If you’re an ADI, we’d encourage you to make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready to take it and in a location they can easily travel to.

TUNNEL VISION VS WIDE AWARENESS

Why it happens with learners and how we fix it

Tunnel vision is common in learner drivers.
It is not a flaw.
It is a phase.

When someone is learning, their brain is busy doing many things at once.
Steering.
Speed control.
Gears or pedals.
Road position.
Signs.
Instructions.

When the brain is overloaded, it narrows focus to cope.
That is when awareness shrinks to what is directly ahead.

This is why learners sometimes miss:
Vehicles approaching from behind
Pedestrians at the side of the road
Cyclists
Changes developing further ahead

The goal of learning to drive is not just control of the car.
It is freeing up mental space.

That is where instructors step in.

As skills become automatic, attention expands.
Scanning improves.
Mirrors become purposeful.
Hazards are seen earlier, not reacted to late.

Wide awareness is not taught by telling someone to “look more”.
It is built through repetition, calm teaching, and confidence.

Tunnel vision fades as competence grows.

Why Driving Lessons Cost What They Do

Many people are surprised by the cost of professional driving lessons. On the surface, it can look like “just an hour in a car”, but the reality is very different.

The Real Costs Behind Every Lesson

Driving instructors are self-employed professionals, not salaried employees. That means:
• No sick pay – if we’re ill, we earn nothing
• No holiday pay – time off means no income
• No pension contributions – we fund our own future

On top of this, instructors personally pay for:
• Vehicle lease or finance
• Fuel costs
• Insurance (specialist instructor cover)
• Servicing, tyres, brakes, and repairs
• Valeting and cleaning (for hygiene and professionalism)
• Dual controls and safety equipment
• Advertising, websites, booking systems, and software
• Ongoing training, standards checks, and compliance

These costs run every single month, whether the car is on the road or not.

Consumables & Wear and Tear

A driving school car works far harder than a private car. Clutches, brakes, tyres and gearboxes wear out much faster due to constant stop-start driving, hill starts, and learner mistakes. These aren’t occasional expenses — they’re built into doing the job properly and safely.

What You’re Really Paying For

You’re not just paying for time. You’re paying for:
• Professional instruction from a fully qualified instructor
• Structured lessons tailored to the learner
• Local test-route knowledge
• Risk management and safety coaching
• Confidence building, not just test-passing
• Accountability, reliability, and professionalism

Most importantly, you’re investing in a skill for life, not just a driving test. Good instruction reduces the risk of collisions, builds safer habits, and helps new drivers make better decisions long after the L-plates come off.

Value, Not Just Cost

A well-trained driver can save thousands of pounds over a lifetime through:
• Fewer accidents
• Lower insurance premiums
• Reduced vehicle damage
• Safer, calmer driving habits

Driving lessons aren’t expensive — poor instruction is.

🚗 For those pupils who feel that it's unfair if an instructor removes their car for a driving test, please let me explain for those that do not know how driving instructors are monitored -

🚗 In recent years, the DVSA decided to change the way in which we, as instructors are monitored on our test performances......In presenting a candidate to test, they MUST be at a safe standard for a driving test, to make informed decisions without the help of their instructor and for the examiner to confidently sign the PASS CERTIFICATE.

🚗 If an instructor has too many FAILS, it can trigger what is known as a Standards Check, whereby a DVSA Enforcement agent (yep, stupid title) gets to sit in the back of the instructors lesson and score their performance 🤔 Grade A Grade B or FAIL... Now you may think that this is a good thing, to check on how instructors teach/value for money etc!

🚗 However, an instructor can be the BEST, with fantastic rapport with their pupils, informative and liveability BUT if they FAIL their Standards Check 3 times, they LOSE their livelihood and their badge removed!!!

🚗 So, before any of you judge that its harsh of the instructor to refuse the use of their car, if they feel that YOU are not at the acceptable standard to pass...Think again! To you, it's a rearranged driving test but to them - It could be the difference between TEACHING OR NOT!

🚗 We, any of us do not make the decision out of spite/nastiness or vindictiveness BUT ultimately to KEEP YOU SAFE!
