This is an interesting post I came across today.
Definitely food for thought 🤔
I frankly find it staggering that some individuals believe they are performing a public service by advertising the locations of mobile speed cameras.
In reality, all they are doing is helping those who habitually exceed the speed limit to continue doing so. A quick warning in a social media group doesn’t change behaviour; it simply encourages drivers to slow down temporarily before carrying on as before.
There will always be those who insist that “speed never hurt or killed anyone,” or who claim that their driving skills are so exceptional that they could never be involved in a serious collision. Confidence, however, is no substitute for the laws of physics, human reaction times, or the unpredictable actions of others on the road.
The speed limits in place are there for a reason: to reduce risk, protect the vulnerable, and save lives.
When you have stood in front of a grieving mother and had to tell her that her son has died because he was driving at excessive speed, you gain a very different perspective. The devastation left behind is lifelong. The knock on the door that changes a family’s world forever is something no parent should ever have to experience.
Advertising the location of speed cameras isn’t about protecting motorists. It’s about helping people avoid the consequences of dangerous choices.
If warning drivers about enforcement genuinely changed attitudes and made people slow down all of the time, that would be one thing. But if it simply enables persistent speeders to evade detection and continue putting others at risk, then we have to ask ourselves whose interests are really being served.
Road safety isn’t about revenue. It isn’t about catching people out. It’s about preventing the phone call, the hospital visit, and the heartbreaking conversation that no family should ever have to endure.
Slow down. Obey the speed limit. Get everyone home safely.
