At Performance Pretsige it’s true that we’re specialists in all things VAG, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Bentley but we do also dabble in other vehicles, especially when they’re a bit special such as this very serious Vauxhall VX220 track car

This little weapon was in with us for servicing and it was a genuine pleasure to care for such a thoughtfully built car

The VX220 was an adaptation of Lotus’ incredible Elise but with a larger engine of Vauxhall’s own design. Safe to say it’s a little more exciting than the majority of Vauxhalls but still retains the usability and relatively simple but reliable components that they’re known for

A great deal of effort goes into building a proper track car and this one has all the right modifications

As you can imagine, a car that’s used in the way that this was intended is subjected to a life that a normal road car would never experience
That makes maintenance incredibly important, you can’t afford a failure whilst you’re mid way though a chicane at full chat!

If you see our posts a lot you’ll have read us waxing lyrical about how efficiency is king when it comes to engines. An engine that can efficiently produce its power, getting the most useable energy from every drop of fuel, is the goal of every manufacturer. Efficient means low fuel consumption, high power output and low emissions too but it’s not easy. An average engine is about 30-35% efficient. This means that 35% of the stored energy within the liquid fuel is turned into tractive power that actually turns the wheels. The rest is lost in heat, noise and frictional losses.
The designers at Mercedes AMG hit an all time high when they produced their incredible 2.0 litre turbo 4-cylinder in the A45 AMG that achieved a staggering 50% efficiency!

The car we have in here is the slightly lower power version, called the A35AMG - still a very powerful hot hatch that shares much of its design with this record breaking engine.

This pocket rocket was entrusted to us for its servicing, undergoing a Full Service, including engine oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter and spark plugs.
As you can imagine, a huge amount of tech is intergrated into a power unit like this to manage such crazy levels of power and efficiency and so regular servicing, carried out correctly and with good quality parts is absolutely vital.

We carry out some really in depth, complex work at Performance Prestige. This lovely SEAT Leon Cupra came in for a couple of repairs

Firstly the coolant pump - this car is powered by VW group’s superb 2.0TSI engine. This engine is bristling with tech to give it prodigious power and good fuel economy.
Its design incorporates several ingenious ideas that help it achieve what it does.
One area that’s cleverly designed is its cooling system. With a coolant pump built into a “thermo control unit” that controls coolant flow to maintain optimum temperature and to reduce load and parasitic loses caused by the coolant pump by only allowing it to flow when needed.
This unit is driven unconventionally, by a toothed belt from the back end of one of the 2 balance shafts deep down in the engine.
This is a great space saver but makes replacing it somewhat time consuming!
As you can see from the photos there’s quite a lot needs removing to gain access
The actual fault is that the pump unit’s plastic housing can crack, causing a coolant leak, which if left unchecked can be damaging

The second fault was a leaking shock absorber - a simple fault in itself but gives a great reason to talk about its clever system called Magnetic Ride
This system uses tiny metal particles within the oil-type fluid inside the dampers. This fluid can be affected by a magnetic field, effectively changing the viscosity of the fluid. This changes the way the shocks work, making them firmer at the touch of a button, or at the request of an ECU which decides as and when it should add or remove damping affect
This gives the best of both worlds, allowing the car to be soft when desired but in a fraction of a second it can become firm and controlled

Technology like this makes working on cars nowadays interesting and great fun too, and at Performance Prestige we can give your car the best care

Another day, another Porsche….. this absolute animal of a car is a 996 Turbo, meaning it’s already a fast car, utilising Porsche’s superb flat 6, twin turbo motor and all wheel drive system. But this one’s been breathed on to raise that power even higher

Even with that clever all wheel drive system, this car deserves its reputation as a car for the more talented driver

Porsche are known for their incredible sports cars and ability to make the 911, a car who’s engine is hanging out the back like a huge pendulum, handle like a delicate ballerina and once they turned their engineering abilities to SUVs there was no turning back! First came the Cayenne, a huge 4x4 that wowed the world with its surprising handling and luxury.
Then came this, the Mecan - a smaller, even more nimble SUV but one that’s certainly not lacking in creature comforts and style

This one is powered by the VAG 3.0TDi V6 that provides plenty of shove whilst still being relatively economical

We harp on about maintenance a lot here but it’s SO important!

Certain items require replacing periodically, either based on mileage or time

Here’s a Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0TDi that came in for its Timing Belt and Water Pump change

A timing belt (also known as a cam belt) is a vital part of the engine. It’s a toothed belt that transmits drive from the crankshaft to the camshaft and is responsible for, as the name suggests, keeping them in “time” with each other
If these 2 items go “out of time” with each other than really bad stuff happens - the result is many many broken bits and a hefty bill to repair it

As the belt is made of reinforced rubber it can degrade over time and wear with use, so it’s changed every now and again

Carrying out a job like this MUST be done properly and with the correct tools.
The pulleys for the camshaft and high pressure fuel pump can be adjusted to compensate for the tensioning of the belt during fitting. If this isn’t done correctly then when the jobs done the engine can run but it’ll be noisier than it should and less efficient due to a slight change in camshaft timing.

Done properly, the engine runs sweetly, quietly and safely for years to come

We specialise in all things German at Performance Prestige, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley, Porsche and Volkswagen are what we do best.
This brings some cool cars into our workshop, old and new alike, and there’s no denying that this classic is cool!

A Mk5 Golf R32, the snorty, shouty predecessor to the incredibly popular Golf R, it had it all - 4Motion all wheel drive, beefy looks and a glorious sounding 3.2 litre (yes, that’s right, 3.2 litre!!!!) free revving V6 engine that made for a very exciting car indeed!

That engine really was special. Known as a VR6, which stood for “Verkürzt Reihenmotor 6”, roughly translated it means “shortened inline engine”

The genius here was to combine the capacity and smooth operation of a V6 with the attributes and physical size of a more common inline 4 cylinder engine. They achieved this by creating a narrow angle V6. This meant that the cylinders of each bank almost crossed over each other and had angled piston tops which allowed for a single cylinder head…. On a V6!
This packaging was superb and allowed the family sized Golf hatch to have some serious performance!

Cars like this are not common and the technology and design they employ are not for the uninitiated

Let’s talk EGR…….. Exhaust Gas Recirculation is a much misunderstood system that aids with emissions control.
As modern engines are so incredibly efficient at converting fuel into motive power they run very very hot within the cylinders. At a certain temperature a chemical change occurs in the spent gases immediately after combustion that causes very harmful NOx (nitrogen monoxide) to form that is then expelled into the exhaust system and then, ultimately, into the atmosphere. This is bad…..
So, clever engine boffins decided to make that exhaust gas work with itself….

The engine constantly monitors the exhaust gas temperature and if it gets high enough where NOx could be formed then it reduces this temp slightly by feeding a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The addition of this spent gas reduces the efficiency of the of the I you’re within the cylinders and, hey presto, NOx issue kept at bay!

So, this means the EGr system is really quite invoked and clever, despite the assumption of many that it gives the engine a “second chance” to burn the gases left in the exhaust and it’s vital to the correct running of the engine

As you can imagine, the exhaust gases can be VERY hot indeed and needs cooling down a little before it’s re-introduction to the (plastic) intake manifold otherwise it could cause damage. This is achieved by way f an EGR cooler…. Exhaust gas is passed through a coolant filled heat exchanger.

That’s where the issue was here with this Audi A5 3.0 TDi

Coolant flow is controlled by a plastic valve that, on this case, has worn and started to leak coolant

The part is fairly minor but getting to it is a task in itself!

You can see how much has to be removed to gain access

Having the knowledge of how systems function fully on modern vehicles is vital in order to maintain and correctly diagnose issue as and when they occur
