I’m not sure how this, along with several other incorrect procedures, managed to gain such a massive following! Just take a glance through the Highway Code to remind yourself of the rules, or find out what they actually are, instead of following others - it’s not that complicated!
Yesterday Officers from A Unit OPU sighted a driver on the M6 Northbound in lane 2 (middle lane in this instance) driving at between 55 - 60mph with no slower moving traffic or obstructions in lane 1.
Officers took this driver off the motorway and ticketed him for driving without showing reasonable consideration for other road users - it is likely that he will receive a driver improvement course, for which the driver will have to pay.
Officers are seeing more and more people driving in this way, seemingly unaware of the dangers it poses.
Other road users will assume that by being in an overtaking lane, they will be doing the speed limit for that road and vehicle, and will approach accordingly and have to unnecessarily use the lanes to the right to overtake.
Whilst the speed limit is exactly that, a limit and not a target nor a minimum, it is a poor standard of driving to sit in an overtaking lane doing well below that limit when there is no slower moving traffic to the left, or other obstructions.
Unless overtaking or avoiding hazards, please keep to the left or you risk up to 3 points on your driving licence and a £100.00 fine.
