What’s Across the Water from Rockcliffe? 🐾🌊

Ever wondered what’s across from your usual walk at Rockcliffe?

Look closely across the Rough Firth and you’ll spot the alluring Horse Isles Bay — a beautiful, secluded little corner of the Dumfries & Galloway coast that feels surprisingly hidden, despite being right there in front of you.

This lovely photo was taken by an owner out enjoying the area with her dog — and it seemed the perfect excuse to find out a little more about the view we so often admire from the Rockcliffe side.

Horse Isles Bay, also known as White Horse Bay, sits on the opposite side of the Rough Firth, on the Almorness peninsula. At high tide it has a sandy shoreline, while at low tide the water retreats dramatically, revealing the mudflats of the Solway. From the bay, you can look back across the water towards Rockcliffe and Kippford, with Rough Island also part of the wider view.

It’s a wonderfully peaceful spot, reached on foot through woodland from the Almorness area. One walking route describes the arrival at the bay as a particularly lovely surprise after the woodland — and it’s easy to see why.

There’s also a little local history here. Horse Isles Bay was once used by the Almorness Estate, and the wider Urr estuary was important to sailing and trade. Historical sources also record the bay as White Horse Bay. (dalbeattiemuseum.co.uk)

So next time you’re standing at Rockcliffe looking across the water, remember: there’s another little bay waiting to be discovered on the other side. 🌿🐕📸

Have you ever walked out to Horse Isles Bay?

**INTERVIEW WITH AN OWNER AT COASTAL KIPPFORD **

What made you decide to buy at Costal Kippford ?

Firstly, the local area is beautiful . You have so much to choose from - forest , sea, Interesting towns , country and costal walks and more . It always seems so peaceful and relatively safe . That’s really important to me as a single female .

Secondly , the site itself is streets ahead of other sites -in terms of its’ landscaping -which really respects owner’s privacy - as well as looks beautiful. I’d rather pay a bit more and not be ‘cheek to jowl’ with other caravans. It’s also in a great spot - you can walk to the beach on the pavement or through the adjoining woods , stroll to the seafront pubs, bar and cafes, walk to the pubs ( did I say that already !)

Thirdly , I’ve owned here before . I know the standards that the staff keep to, in relation to the upkeep of the site. And yet they manage to maintain a site of beauty without ‘over policing’ it. I want to feel comfortable when I’m staying . If there’s a serious issue , the site staff deal with it. But they aren’t on your case over every trivial thing . They are a friendly , helpful, relaxed bunch of people. I also trust them not to hike prices up unreasonably . That was a big part of my decision to buy here .

Fourthly , we are so lucky to have a really decent , helpful bunch of owners. We have a page and there’s always someone who can help with something . The visitors , from my experience, who rent for holiday , have always been decent and courteous .

What concerns did you have about buying?

Well its a financial output that isn’t , on the face of it , the best investment . Your place will devalue , there’s bills to pay …
But , balancing that, is the fact that it’s much cheaper than buying a bricks and mortar place; all the hassle is taken care of ( eg gardening / sorting out the billing such as rates / no decorating / water is plumbed / and gas is delivered etc ). There’s been a real clampdown on second home owners with council tax hikes. You don’t get that here . Basically you keep your spot tidy and sit back !

Also , you are allowed to rent out if you wish and the site has the licence for this . Let’s be honest , you aren’t going to become Richard Branson , but you can cover costs if you want .

Friends and family said to me “ just go and rent a holiday place !” But, as a single person, I tended to avoid this . I was also disorganised / last minute / busy busy. Whereas my static is my own haven. I can skip off there anytime . I don’t feel awkward or unsafe in any way . I know exactly what I’m getting . And my friends and family love it. It can be difficult feeling upbeat in today’s world . So many stresses and so much conflict. This place is a wee Brigadoon ( that’s a comment the older folk will understand !)

Is there anything you don’t like ?

The WiFi is erratic on some spots , but hey , a digital detox is what we need I think . There’s freeview tv from the Ariel that’s provided , there’s WiFi for the basics. So it hasn’t been a big deal.

I used to find the statics cold in winter , but the newer models are much better insulated . The site is open all year and I take advantage .

Any regrets ?

No. I thought about the pluses and minuses well before I bought and it has worked out as I expected . An absolute saviour in a busy and crazy world . It’s an investment in my wellbeing. It was a very good decision- even my family agree now !

Here’s the reason I love it in a picture
