🔧 MEET RICHARD – OUR HEAD TECHNICIAN 👨‍🔧

Ever wondered what actually goes into some of the repairs we carry out?

In this video, Richard, one of our Head Technicians, takes you under the bonnet of this BMW and talks you through the job while it’s being carried out.

Richard has worked with the company for a few years now, bringing plenty of experience and knowledge to the workshop.

On this BMW, you can see just how involved an EGR cooler repair can actually be:

🔧 The engine has been stripped down to gain access around the inlet and EGR system
🔧 Richard shows the components and areas we're working on
🔧 He explains the access and work involved in replacing the EGR cooler
🔧 You can see the removed components, seals and gaskets involved in completing the job correctly

When you see “replace EGR cooler” written on a quote or invoice, it doesn't necessarily show the amount of work required just to gain access to the component and carry out the repair properly.

🎥 That’s why we make these videos.

We want our customers to see what we're seeing, understand what's happening with their vehicle and know exactly what they're paying for.

Great explanation from Richard on this one. 👏🔧

🔧 CARBON BUILD-UP – A COMMON PROBLEM ON MODERN ENGINES 🔧

This photo is a great example of what can happen inside the intake system of a modern engine.

The component being held is the boost/manifold pressure sensor, and you can see that the end of the sensor has become heavily contaminated with carbon deposits.

⚠️ WHAT’S GONE WRONG?

Carbon and soot have built up inside the intake manifold, to the point where the pressure sensor is becoming blocked. When this happens, the sensor may no longer be able to accurately measure the pressure and airflow conditions inside the manifold.

This can contribute to:

❌ Engine management lights
❌ Loss of power / poor performance
❌ Incorrect boost readings
❌ Poor running
❌ DPF/EGR-related problems
❌ Fault codes and limp mode

🔧 WHAT DOES IT NEED?

Simply cleaning or replacing the sensor doesn’t address the carbon build-up that caused the problem.

In this case, the intake system requires a proper carbon clean/walnut blasting procedure to remove the accumulated deposits and restore airflow through the affected areas. The sensor can then be cleaned or replaced as required before the system is reassembled and tested.

At Ignition Autos, we specialise in diagnosing the cause of the fault rather than simply replacing the part showing the fault code.

YOUR SHOCK ABSORBER SHOULDN’T LOOK LIKE THIS…

This shock absorber has developed an oil leak, meaning it’s no longer able to control the suspension as effectively as it should.

A failing shock absorber can cause poor handling, increased stopping distances, excessive bouncing and uneven tyre wear – and once the leak becomes significant, it can also result in an MOT failure.

Suspension problems aren’t always something you can feel straight away, which is why a proper inspection is so important. 🔧

GREEN ISN’T THE RESULT WE WANTED TO SEE…

This vehicle has undergone a combustion leak / sniff test at Edward Street Garage – Crewe.

The fluid changing to this green colour indicates combustion gases are present within the cooling system – meaning this engine is looking quite poorly and further investigation is required.

This can point towards an internal engine problem such as a failing head gasket or cylinder head issue.

It’s why we test properly before recommending major engine repairs. 🔧

WORN SUSPENSION BUSH – SMALL PART, BIG DIFFERENCE!

This suspension bush has split and deteriorated, meaning it’s no longer supporting and controlling the suspension as it should.

Worn suspension bushes can cause knocking noises, poor handling, unstable steering and uneven tyre wear. If the movement becomes excessive, it can also result in an MOT failure.

At Edward Street Garage – Crewe, our vehicle inspections help spot problems like this before they develop into bigger repairs.

TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT IN PROGRESS

Another engine stripped down at Edward Street Garage – Crewe for a timing chain replacement.

The timing chain is a critical part of the engine, keeping everything perfectly synchronised. When chains, guides or tensioners begin to wear, symptoms can include rattling noises, engine management lights, timing faults and poor running.

If left too long, a timing chain failure can result in serious internal engine damage – so catching the warning signs early can make a massive difference.

From initial diagnostics through to in-depth engine repairs, we’ve got you covered.

OIL IN THE TURBO PIPEWORK – TIME TO INVESTIGATE!

During diagnostics at Edward Street Garage – Crewe, we found a significant amount of oil within the turbo/intake pipework.

While a small amount of oil mist can be normal on some engines, excessive oil contamination needs investigating. It can point towards issues within the turbocharger, breather system or other areas of the engine.

Rather than simply replacing parts, we carry out further testing to establish where the oil is coming from and why it’s there. 🔧

Proper diagnostics. Find the cause, not just the symptom.

WHEN YOUR BRAKES DON’T RELEASE PROPERLY…

This vehicle came into Edward Street Garage – Crewe with a binding brake, and the condition of this disc shows just how much heat and damage that can create.

When a brake binds, it remains partially applied while driving, causing excessive heat, accelerated pad and disc wear, increased fuel consumption and potentially further damage to the braking system.

Signs can include a hot smell, the vehicle feeling like it’s holding back, pulling to one side or excessive heat from one wheel.

Don’t ignore it – brakes are one area you definitely don’t want to take chances with.

HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR ENGINE?

Here at Edward Street Garage – Crewe, we don’t believe in guessing when it comes to engine problems.

A compression check allows us to measure the pressure produced inside each cylinder and compare the results. This can help identify internal problems including valve issues, piston/ring wear and potential head gasket faults.

This cylinder is producing around 200 PSI – a strong reading, but the key is making sure the readings are consistent across all cylinders. 🔧

good diagnosis is about more than simply telling a customer what parts they need. 🔧🔍

In this inspection, Rich talks through exactly what he’s finding as he works around the engine, including the sealing issues and why the vehicle is going to require a replacement rocker cover.

Showing the problem and explaining the repair means our customers understand exactly what’s happening with their vehicle before any work goes ahead.
