As part of our ongoing shipyard refurbishment works here at Arctic Shipyard in Cowes, one of the big aspects has been the full refurbishment of our dry dock gates. We've removed them for a complete overhaul—shot-blasted, painted, and to be refitted with brand-new rubber seals. This replaces the original softwood seals that needed to be caulked to make them watertight. The new system will also mean we hopefully won't need to rely on pumps to keep the dock dry, making the whole operation far more environmentally friendly. Opening, closing and sealing the gates will be much quicker, cleaner, and smoother, allowing faster turnaround for vessels entering and leaving the dry dock.

It's high time I started showing some of the Stainless Steel welding work at the Arctic Shipyard in Cowes. Here are some photos of recent projects, showing the process from templating in thin plywood to fabrication of different items, from stem head fittings to winch bases and fuel tanks - all fabricated in Stainless Steel and polished. Anything can be made or repaired. We also handle mild steel fabrication and can take on almost any welding project, whether it's for boats or land-based projects. Got something in mind? On this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, here is one one of the last surviving vessels that was actually there — MFV 119. Currently undergoing repair works in our Arctic Dry Dock.
Built in early 1944 by Morris of Gosport, this sturdy 65-foot wooden Admiralty type Class 1 Motor Fishing Vessel (MFV) was delivered to the US forces (US Special Services) in Southampton. She was sailed to Omaha Beach with an American crew, playing her part in the greatest amphibious invasion in history.
After supporting the Normandy landings, she continued running stores between Southampton and Le Havre until returning to the Royal Navy in 1945.
There are strong links to the 328th Harbour craft company, who operated the first boats into Cherbourg Harbour after liberation. Further investigations are underway.
Her later life was equally remarkable. In the late 1970s and 1980s she served as a dive support vessel for the Royal Navy Sub-Aqua Club, supporting major underwater archaeology projects — most notably the excavation of the wrecks of HMS Pomone (1811) and HMS Assurance (1753),ships closely associated with the Mary Rose project.
Now 82 years on, MFV 119 remains one of the very few D-Day veterans still with us — a tough little boat with an extraordinary story.

A recent project - The restoration of another Scow sailing dinghy....
This one had spent many years ashore and needed works including some refastening and a good overhaul. Looking a lot better now with fresh varnish. Ready for summer.

Long overdue post! Here's the classic yacht 'Kalèa' on our East Cowes Clarence Yard Slipway. The 70-foot wooden ketch, designed by Bruno Veronese and built in 1965 at Cantieri di Pisa in Italy came in for some routine maintenance and a quick turn around. Great to see her on the slip!
