Do you regularly check your oil level?

We were called to take a look at this Mitsubishi due to the dpf warning being on the dashboard, fortunately it was an easy fix.

Initial diagnostics brought up just one stored code, Engine oil too high. Live data showed the soot load in the dpf was low and this was backed up by the dpf pressure. All other live data looked good.

When the dpf regenerates more fuel is added via the injectors to get more heat into the dpf. If the dpf is regenerating more regularly due to too many short journeys or an underlying fault then some of this extra diesel can get past the pistons and into the sump, thus raising the oil level.

Diluted oil, or raised oil levels is obviously very bad for an engine and this will often lead to a warning for the dpf system.

👨🏼‍💻 Why won’t I clean a dpf without running diagnostics?

“I don’t want to pay for diagnostics because my mates plugged his code reader in and it says dpf soot accumulation”

Stored codes are a very basic starting point, without looking at live diagnostic data, and then testing to prove that information, it’s very easy to do work that doesn’t need doing.

You can have various dpf related codes but the dpf actually be empty, so careful diagnostics and years of experience is essential to get the correct result for the customer.

It’s a simple fix……if you can get the part 🙄

The owner of this Jaguar F-Pace got in contact after the DPF warning appeared on the dashboard. He had tried taking it on a long drive but still had the warning.

⚠️ Our initial scan for codes brought up soot accumulation and dpf pressure sensor faults.
Live data showed a high soot load reading, but more importantly, no pressure reading or voltage coming from the pressure sensor.

A manual pressure check of the dpf showed just under 1psi of back pressure at 3000rpm. This confirmed the dpf wasn’t blocked and didn’t need cleaning, and the pressure sensor was dead and needed replacing.

🚙 After a ring around it became apparent that JLR didn’t have any pressure sensors in stock, and probably wouldn’t have any until November!!

After sourcing an aftermarket part (always use genuine if possible) fitting, and setting up, we rechecked the live data and everything was reading as it should ✅

🚫 How do I know if my dpf needs replacing?

The most common sign that the dpf has failed is soot around the tailpipe. The dpf’s job is to trap carbon particles so they can be burnt off during a regeneration instead of being blown out to atmosphere.

When a dpf fails those carbon particles can pass through the dpf and out to atmosphere, coating the inside of the exhaust on its way.

⚠️ What vehicles suffer the least with DPF problems?

This is a question I’m often asked, and in my opinion I would say either Hondas or Toyotas, as we tend to see very few of them through the year.

This particular Honda needed a dpf clean due to too many short journeys, the owner is retired and only uses it to take the dogs out or do local runs. I won’t repeat what he said when I suggested he would be better off with a petrol…..suffice to say he’s not keen on petrol engines……..and less so on electric 😂

Mazda CX-5, 2.2 Skyactive diesel.

As some of you may be aware, these engines can start causing serious harm to your wallet as they get into the 100k mile territory!

The customer asked if we could run diagnostics to see what was causing the warning lights so he could make a decision on if it was worth doing.

Initial diagnostics brought up two faults, one for the exhaust manifold pressure sensor, and one for the dpf pressure sensor.
As you can see from the video, live data showed both of these sensors were giving incorrect information to the ECU.

All information given to the customer so he can now make a decision on where to go with it.

🚫 2021 Ford Transit
⚠️ Stored code - P2002 - DPF efficiency below threshold.

📊 Live data showed the measured soot load at 21% and the calculated at 75%

The DPF back pressure sensor was showing no movement when the revs were increased so we disconnected the pressure sensor pipe and plugged the manual gauge in…..again no rise in pressure.
The next step was to connect the Mityvac up to the pipe, and hey presto! We had a blockage in the metal pipe, this was cleaned out and pressure reading taken again. This time we got 0.70psi at 2500rpm, which considering the DPF had regenerated 2.5 miles ago was about right.

The customer had been seeing black smoke under hard acceleration, unfortunately this was due to a failed DPF. A check of the tailpipe found a heavy coating of soft carbon.

P2002 - DPF below efficiency ⚠️

A fairly common fault on certain vehicles is the rubber connector pipe between the dpf pressure sensor and the metal dpf inlet pipe burning through!

Live data showed there was pressure getting to the sensor but it was inconsistent. A quick visual check down the back of the engine and the telltale signs of a split pipe was obvious…..everything was covered in soot!

Pipe off, manual pressure test of the dpf showed no blockage so a new piece of pipe fitted, live data checked again. Road test completed, job done 👍
