❌ That was never going to work…..

📞 Customer got in contact with us after having a DPF specialist come out to sort the blocked DPF on his Vauxhall Astra, after adding a bottle of additive to the fuel and giving the car a run on the motorway the DPF was still blocked.

👨🏼‍💻 On arrival we ran a quick check of the codes which brought up two codes for DPF pressure being out of range.
Live data showed the DPF soot level at 255% but more importantly the DPF pressure was 2psi at idle, and over 7psi at 2500rpm. A manual pressure check showed the pressure sensor readings to be correct.
With these pressure readings no amount of fuel additive or hard driving would of got the ecu to start the regeneration process, and if a regeneration had taken place then it’s highly likely damage would of been done to the DPF.

🧽 After running all our necessary checks and diagnostics we performed a two stage chemical clean of the DPF to wash out the excess soot, we then went out for a drive with the customer to check the live diagnostics under real world driving conditions to ensure everything was working as it should.

DPF clear, codes clear, customer happy 😃

The owner of this Ford S-Max got in contact after being told that the reason for the engine oil being high was down to the dpf.

👨🏼‍💻 Before even starting the car and running diagnostics a noise from the engine bay gave us our first indication of what was probably going to be the main issue.
A constant whirring and clicking from the intake throttle valve was a sure sign that the motor was knackered and not moving the valve, and in turn not controlling air flow into the engine. This has a knock on effect to the regeneration of the dpf.

⚠️ Diagnostics brought up two stored codes for the throttle valve, removing the boost pipe we could feel that the valve wasn’t moving when it should have been.

Looking at live data showed the soot load in the dpf was fine and the back pressure confirmed this. A quick check under the car and we found the low pressure dpf pipe had at some point been snapped off from the sensor, this can now be replaced at the same time as the throttle valve.

🏁 As is often the case the dpf didn’t need cleaning, just a bit of diagnostic time and a few part.

We cleaned the DPF 3 months ago, customer gave us a call to say the warning light is back on.

🚨 On the phone the customer told us that the DPF warning light had started flashing, he then drove it on a 260 mile round trip but the light was still on, so we jumped in the van to go and take a look!

👨🏼‍💻 Thankfully this was a really easy diagnostic job, pulling out the dipstick the oil level was way above the maximum level.
Next up diagnostics were plugged in and codes read, the only code on the entire vehicle was for……..Engine oil too high! Live diagnostic data was then checked, this confirmed the DPF soot load and back pressure were both low.

👍 The customer can now get the oil and filter changed and the code cleared.
This was a very quick job for us, but a huge relief for the customer!

Back with a returning customer for a maintenance Engine Carbon Clean on his Vauxhall Insignia.

🔎 Initial diagnostic check brought up one code for turbo overboost, a few tests showed the turbo actuator to be moving freely through its full range, it also held pressure. The vacuum pump was supplying a strong 28 psi of vacuum to the boost control solenoid, so there is the potential that the solenoid is getting lazy. The customer can now keep an eye on this and change if necessary.

Looking to buy a diesel car? Here’s a top tip that may possibly save you some money!

Always check the tailpipe for soot, the tailpipe of a DPF equipped vehicle should always be clean as the DPF is stopping the particles being blown out to atmosphere.

A sooty tailpipe indicates the DPF has failed or been removed, so if there’s no receipt for a replacement then be very careful as a new filter could cost you big money!

🛑 How long will a brand new DPF take to block up?

➡️ In the case of this Ford Transit it was around 200 miles, the reason was an undiagnosed blocked fuel vaporiser (which would have been the reason for the last DPF blocking up).

ℹ️ Diesel particulate filters regenerate and clean themselves, on average, every 250 miles or so. If there is an underlying fault stopping regeneration, or if the vehicle isn’t being driven far enough, then even a new DPF will become blocked very quickly.

🐌 DPF soot accumulation code, but that’s not the main problem…..

👨🏼‍💻 A scan of the codes brought up one for DPF soot accumulation which was backed up by the back pressure which was just over 2 psi, but whilst running other checks we noticed that the boost was actually dropping instead of rising., this rang an alarm bell as there was a trail of oil down the side of the DPF so a check of the turbo was in order. Unfortunately there was a large amount of play in the shaft so this will need to be replaced before any further damage is done!

🆘 Suspected Gasoline Particulate Filter fault on a Range Rover……..

⚠️ One of our old customers gave us a call regarding the poor running of his mothers 2ltr petrol Range Rover, the car has been suffering with hesitation and stuttering for quite a while and recently threw the engine management light on.

🚨 The car was taken to a garage to have the codes read, this brought up one code for the GPF (yes modern petrol engines now have particulate filters!), the code was cleared and she was sent on her way.
Though the light stayed off the rough running issue remained.

👨🏼‍💻 On arrival a quick scan for codes showed nothing stored (a miracle in its self on a Range Rover 😆).
Revving the engine and there was noticeable misfiring which was backed up by the live data which showed multiple misfires across the 4 cylinders, though not consistent. Fuel trim readings were also inconsistent.

🔎 The owner had mentioned that the vehicle had been serviced with the main dealer some months ago and the rough running started shortly afterwards, so I decided to check if the air filter had actually been replaced……but didn’t get that far as the pipe from the turbo to the air filter wasn’t actually pushed onto the air box (the jubilee clip was done up though 😃), with the pipe connected correctly, the customer reported back after a test drive that the car was now running smoothly again 👍

❓So will Gasoline Particulate Filters be as problematic as Diesel Particulate Filters? In theory they shouldn’t be due to the way they work…….but time will tell!

Brand new DPF fitted, but engine management light back on 🚨

👨🏼‍💻 We were given a call to take a look at this Ford Transit which had just had a new DPF fitted (the second in 3 years) unfortunately within 24hrs or so of use the engine management light came back on and a soot accumulation code was showing. A forced regeneration was performed which didn’t resolve the issue.

On arrival we confirmed the soot accumulation code, live data showed a high soot content and DPF back pressure, though both were just on the lower side of maximum.

🔎 Having done many Transits over the last 8 years the next step was to get under the vehicle and check the DPF fuel vapouriser as these are a common failure point for failed regenerations. Visually it looked old and rusty and a pressure checked soon showed it was completely blocked. With the vapouriser blocked the DPF is unable to reach the desired 600+ degrees needed to burn off the soot trapped in the DPF, thus even a brand new DPF can become blocked in a few hundred miles!

We carried out further checks to make sure that this was the only cause of the failed regeneration, which it was.

Jaguar XF with a recurring DPF warning on the dashboard, did it need cleaning? 🧽

Nope, a faulty DPF pressure sensor was the root cause of the issue, so no clean required. Simple diagnostics and testing again saving our customers time and money.

Is your DPF warning light on? Been quoted big 💰 for a replacement? Call us first!!

👨🏼‍💻 The owner of this Astra had been quoted over £1000 to replace the DPF, we resolved the issue within an hour, using no new parts or cleaning of the DPF.

🔎 With 8 years experience specialising in DPF diagnostics and cleaning we always aim to get the customer the correct result for the least amount of money.
