***PARALLEL PARKING***

One of the most feared manoeuvres — students arrive convinced they’ll never be able to do it. Then we go through it together, and almost every time: “Oh… that’s actually not that bad.”

REVERSE LEFT
STRAIGHT
RIGHT
STRAIGHT
FINISH

The foundation is everything. Once you understand why each step works, adapting it to a tighter space like this one becomes instinctive rather than stressful.

Today we made a few small adjustments to squeeze into a shorter gap — and nailed it first time.

For students who’ll be parking on residential streets every single day, I hold the standard higher from the start. There’s no point passing your test and then spending ten minutes anxiously edging in and out of spaces outside your own house. We practise until small spaces feel normal.

Because confident parking isn’t just a test skill — it’s a life skill. The goal isn’t to get you through a manoeuvre on exam day. It’s to make sure you never have to think twice about it again.

If you’re in the Colchester area and want to feel this confident behind the wheel, link to book a lesson in bio.

🚗 We all know someone who struggles with parking — it might even be you.

Avoiding certain car parks because they’re too cramped. Going at quieter times. Parking a mile away just so nobody’s watching.

If that’s working for you, fair enough. But for a lot of people it’s genuinely stressful — and they wish it didn’t have to be.

Here’s something most people don’t know: parking wasn’t even part of the driving test originally, so it simply wasn’t taught. And when it was introduced, many instructors had never been properly taught it themselves. That’s how an entire generation ended up winging it.

My technique is straightforward. With just a few simple cues, you’ll be parking confidently — and wondering what all the stress was about.

Sessions are 30 minutes, held online, with limited spaces so everyone gets the chance to ask questions and leave with something genuinely useful.
Whether you’re a learner or have held your licence for years — this is for you.

***IPSWICH ROAD ROUNDABOUT - COLCHESTER***

If you’re from the area, you’ll probably know this is one of those roundabouts that really divides people.

It used to be two smaller roundabouts joined in the middle — people complained. Then it was changed to one larger, oval-shaped roundabout… and people still complain 🙄

In reality, most of the issues aren’t the roundabout itself, but how some people use it. That then creates knock-on problems for everyone else.

The main thing with this one is the shape. It’s quite extreme, so maintaining your position is key. If you recognise early on that it isn’t a normal roundabout, you can start planning for that on the approach and adjust accordingly.

It’s also a busy one, and from this direction you can be dealing with multiple hill starts before even getting on, as well as when joining.

For the second exit, keeping left is important. A good way to help with that is to aim towards the island or the cars waiting at the first exit — not so much that you go into them, but enough to guide your position.

What often happens is people focus too much on not getting close to the left, drift away from it, and end up edging over the line on the right into the next lane 😦 In trying to avoid one issue, they create another.

This is why keeping a steady speed helps — it allows you to hold your position properly without overreacting or pulling away when it starts to feel uncomfortable.

If you’re a learner, watch this one again before your next lesson and maybe ask your instructor to give this a try, see if it helps and let me know in the comments ⬇️

Even if you’re an experience driver this idea should still really help you, especially if you find you get tooted a bit on this roundabout 🫣

Moving off from the side of the road is one of the most common areas where learners lose marks on the test.

Why? Because most of the time… there’s nothing there. It can feel pointless checking again and again. But the one time you don’t check properly could be the moment something is there—and that’s when it matters most.

That’s why building strong habits from day one is key.

I teach the six-point check:
1. Left shoulder (blind spot)
2. Left mirror
3. Ahead
4. Right mirror
5. Right shoulder (blind spot)
6. Final check before moving

It’s a solid routine—but the danger comes when people start rushing or skipping checks altogether.

Instead, I encourage learners to think: who / what / where am I checking for?
Because observations aren’t just head movements—they’re purposeful checks.

Depending on where you’re parked, you might need to look out for:
🚶 Pedestrians
🚴 Cyclists
🚗 Moving vehicles
🏡 Driveways
🔀 Junctions

When you understand what’s likely to be around you, your observations become intentional—not automatic.

And here’s the reality:
👉 Insufficient observations when moving off is consistently in the top 10 reasons for failing the driving test.

So don’t just go through the motions—make every check count.

Because safe drivers don’t just look…
👀 they see.

Greenstead Roundabout, aka a magic roundabout.

On this occasion we’re doing two mini roundabouts consecutively, right, then right again.

Can seem tricky, but it’s all about staying calm and breaking it down.

Approach slowly, get your observations in early, and pick the correct position for turning right. Give way as needed, then move off smoothly.

As soon as you exit the first mini roundabout, reset your focus — don’t rush. Treat the second one as a completely new situation. Check mirrors, signal right again, control your speed, and repeat the same solid technique.

One at a time. No panic, no overthinking — just steady, controlled driving.

Stay relaxed and trust your process 🙏

Tyres & Tarmac

As a driving instructor this is a really simple phrase I use to help students decide if they’re leaving enough space between them and the car in front.

Sometimes people focus so much on not hitting the car ahead that they end up super close. Ironically, if you focus on leaving a comfortable gap instead, you’re far more likely to keep a safe distance without even thinking about it.

That’s where “tyres and tarmac” comes in.

When you stop behind another vehicle, you should still be able to see their rear tyres and a bit of road (tarmac) between those tyres and the front of your car. If you can see that little patch of road, you’ve usually got a sensible amount of space.

Like most things on the road, there’s a balance. Leave too small a gap and you risk being nudged forward into the car in front if you get hit from behind. Leave too big a gap and other road users might think something’s wrong, or they may try to squeeze into the space.

So we’re aiming for that sweet spot — and remembering “tyres and tarmac” is an easy way to find it every time.
