The Windermere Skiff: A contemporary adaptation of a Lake District Classic

The Four Seat Windermere Skiff is a beautiful, stylish and sophisticated rowing boat, common in the English lake District. Built to a highly developed design, for use on lakes where wind and wave can make a poorly chosen boat, difficult to handle. Large enough for a family and their children, coats, and picnic, they combined space, safety and good performance under oars.

Many of the original wooden Windermere skiffs still exist today and are in everyday use as Lake District hire fleet boats. This is the ideal boat for those lazy summer afternoons on the water. We offer a design based on the best genuine original 4 person Skiff that we could find. It has spacious rowing positions for two and a passenger seat for two.

The Windermere Skiff is the premier recreational rowing boat for boating lakes and rivers. It has been the hire fleet operators boat of choice since Victorian times, was popular in the urban parks of London, Liverpool and Manchester and is still the boat of choice for the UK's largest rowing boat hire fleet operators, for example Windermere Lake Cruises.

We have taken the very best of the Windermere skiff design and re-engineered it for a modern audience. As a result we can offer this safe, stylish and practical boat in thoroughly modern fibre reinforced plastic (FRP), FRP and wood hybrid, and tradtional wood.

Refurbishment of Bassenthwaite Sailing Clubs start boat (The Albert Bates) is nearing completion including refitting the cabin to allowed sheltered seating for two people, simplified electrics and repainting inside and out, including under the waterline.

We've been combining the latest photogrammetric techniques with traditional craftsmanship to give a tired old boat a new lease of life. The 10 foot Borwicks stem dinghy shown in the photos was completely rotten below the waterline and had lost some of her original shape. To produce new planking: we used photogrammetry to record her shape; 3D computer aided design to remove her lumps & bumps and design a building frame; and traditional boat building skills to put her back together.

T.O.A Chairman’s Tideway refastened

The Tideway Owners Club Chairman commissioned us to solve the problem of his leaking Tideway. 800 copper rivets have been replaced, the boat varnished, a new mast made and delivered to Chichester harbour’s Cobnor dinghy park.
