How do you find an air conditioning system leak among a range of crusty, grubby potential failure points? Addition of UV sensitive dye to the refrigerant is the key! Any leaks shine brightly under a UV light, allowing the culprit to be spotted.

We thought we’d share some recent progress on the 911 Cabrio.

Think of a car with double-hinged doors. We love clever little details like this. They’re what make certain cars so unique and full of personality. What are your favourite quirky, weird design details from over the years.

We have an English wheel and are not afraid to use it. We keep it painted a cheerful shade of red. It’s used for putting curvature in sheet steel for the creation of body panels. Here, we use it to shape a piece of metal to serve as a central section in an Aston Martin V8 Vantage bonnet. The V8 came without the distinctive carbon fibre louvres of the V12, so to fit them, some fabrication is required.

Also used: the bead-roller, which had to be extended to reach far enough due to the size of the panel. This is used for profiling the edges of the holes, giving strength and ensuring the carbon fibre parts sit correctly.

The 911’s engine has been partially stripped down - a perfect opportunity to show you the unique configuration. Air-cooled, so no water-to-air cooling system; naturally-aspirated, so no turbo plumbing. Just six very low cylinders and some cooling fins like the processor in your PC.

It wasn’t until the 996 generation 911 in 1997 that Porsche finally made the move to water-cooling. In retrospect, this turned out to be an essential move, although recently, far out in the cosmos of boutique supercar design, Singer and Cosworth have developed a new air-cooled flat-6. It’s based on the block of a 964 (the generation of 911 that followed this one, and Singer’s stock-in-trade) but of course modified, and is new in most other respects: an air-cooled block combined with a water-cooled heads for a mixed system. So if anyone with a new Singer Carrera Coupe fancies bringing it over for servicing, maintenance or a polish, we’d all be very interested to see it… 👀

A recent comment got us thinking about electronics. It's an often overlooked part of what we do, but both crucial and less well understood than a lot of more visible aspects of car work.

The 1980s brought a boom in hi-tech engineering - not just in car design but in architecture (where it's called the "hi-tech" movement; Richard Rogers' 1986 Lloyd's building in London is a famous example), consumer electronics, art and culture. Japanese cars were at the forefront, but the movement quickly spread.

In the US, the C4 generation Chevrolet Corvette, which launched in 1984 after a one-year production hiatus, was a notably more advanced proposition than its predecessor.

These photos show the liquid-crystal instrumentation circuit board, which has been having some work: new capacitors throughout, and re-soldered joints for the integrated circuit chips and header pins, which provide the power to the board.

We thought we'd share something particularly unusual today, which is the sight of a Jaguar E-Type with a laptop plugged into it.

This example is a restomodded SIII built by P&K Thornton that has (among other things) modern wiring and ECU with CAN diagnostics, just like a modern car.

It features a drive-by-wire throttle system, which required its voltage range resetting. This was done with the laptop communicating with the ECU and the throttle pedal being moved through its full range for calibration.

And in any case, getting under the bonnet of this car is an opportunity to admire the enlarged 6.1l engine with its twelve individual throttle bodies. Truly stunning engineering. With its lowered, widened coachwork and manual gearbox, this is a tantalising glimpse of what the E-Type could have evolved into late in its production run.
