Resolving a Persistent Cooling Fan Fault (2001 VW Golf GTI)

​We recently diagnosed a 2001 VW GTI with a battery-killing issue: the cooling fans were running at maximum speed continuously, even with the ignition off and the engine cold.

​The Diagnostic Process:

As many people know, I love a headache when it comes to electrical faults. While many would start by replacing the Fan Control Module or the Radiator Thermal Switch, we performed a voltage test on the 14-pin signal connector first. Testing revealed a constant 12V "ghost" signal on the Yellow/Lilac signal wire—a circuit that should have been at 0V with the vehicle powered down.

​The Root Cause:

By inspecting the wiring loom, we identified a physical rub-through between two conductors. A heavy-gauge constant battery wire had chafed through its insulation and made contact with the thin signal wire. This created an unintended bridge, sending a permanent "On" command to the control module that bypassed all thermal switches and ignition controls.

​The Solution:

The compromised sections of both conductors were removed to ensure clean copper. The circuit was restored with adhesive-lined heat shrink to provide a moisture-proof seal, and the harness was re-insulated and re-routed to eliminate the original friction point.

​The Result:

System functionality is fully restored. The fans now cycle only when required by engine temperature. This systematic approach saved the client from unnecessary component replacement and provided a permanent fix to a complex electrical issue.

⚠️ Ford EcoBoost Owners – Worth Reading ⚠️
We’re seeing more and more Ford EcoBoost engines coming into the workshop with serious damage caused by the wet timing belt breaking down.
🛠 What actually goes wrong:
These engines use a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. Over time the belt starts to break up, shedding rubber into the oil. That debris then blocks the oil pickup strainer.
🚫 What that causes:
• Drop or complete loss of oil pressure
• Oil pressure warning lights
• Engine knocking or rattling
• In many cases, engine failure and turbo failure
The worrying part is that some cars still drive “normally” right up until the damage is already done.
🔍 Our honest advice:
• Never ignore oil pressure warnings
• Don’t rely on the long factory belt intervals
• If the belt hasn’t been done, get it checked before it gets expensive
If you run a Ford EcoBoost, especially higher-mileage vehicles, it’s worth getting advice sooner rather than later.
