Record's Maggie Barry and Will Payton take on John Cleland in historic event celebrating Jim Clark's life.

It is not often you get to race a champion Touring Car driver but when our Lotus Cortina drew parallel with John Cleland on a cleared northbound Forth Road Bridge, the temptation was too much to resist.

Will Payton gripped the wheel of the Cortina and put his foot down. In the DKW, that was once raced by Jim Clark, John Cleland looked at us and replied - and the two cars raced onwards leaving the other classics in their wake.

Inside the Cortina, we urged Will on - and never had I thought when I agreed to do it, that driving in convoy across the Forth Road Bridge was going to be such fun.

Yesterday as hundreds lined the bridge and even more inspected the vehicles beforehand, motor enthusiasts across Scotland and beyond paid tribute at the Forth Road Bridge to a piece of automotive history.

It is 50 years since Jim Clark won his British Touring Car Champion title, 40 years since Scotland’s racing circuit Knockhill opened and where better to celebrate the occasion than the Forth Road Bridge, which is 50 years old this year and links Edinburgh to Fife where Jim Clark was born.
