What happens during the driving test?

There's 5 parts to the driving test and we thought we'd give you an overview of each part.

1️⃣Eyesight check
You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:

20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate.
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.

2️⃣‘Show me, tell me’ questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

You’ll be asked the:
‘tell me’ question at the start of your test, before you start driving
‘show me’ question while you’re driving

3️⃣Your general driving ability
You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways.

The examiner will give you directions that you should follow. Driving test routes are not published, so you cannot check them before your test.

Pulling over at the side of the road
You’ll be asked to pull over and pull away during your test, including:
Normal stops at the side of the road
Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
A hill start

You might also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

4️⃣Reversing your vehicle
The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises:
Parallel park at the side of the road
Park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic

5️⃣ Independent driving
You’ll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:

Directions from a sat nav
traffic signs
The examiner will tell you which you have to follow.

Your driving test is nothing to fear. Our driving instructors have been trained to make sure you are 100% ready for your test when it comes around.

We want our students to be successful in the whole journey of learning to drive, which is why we give our pupils access to Theory Test Pro - an app that gets students to answer questions and watch hazard perception videos.

Once a student has paid a deposit they'll receive their access to practice whilst on the waiting list. It contains all the official revision test questions licensed from the DVSA, the people who set the tests.

This app has been designed to help instructors support pupils with their theory tests. We will encourage pupils to book their theory test when they have completed a certain amount of the app.

Ask your driving instructor about it today.

Rules for parking on Double Yellow Lines from The Highway Code🚗
You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates (or zone entry signs if in a Controlled Parking Zone.)
Double yellow lines indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time even if there are no upright signs.
You MUST NOT wait, park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers, on school entrance markings when upright signs indicate a prohibition of stopping.

🚗💨 Clear Vision = Safe Driving! 👀✨
Whether you’re a new driver or brushing up on your skills, visibility is key to staying safe on the roads. Here are some quick tips to keep your view crystal clear:

🌧 Windscreen Wisdom:
Always keep your windscreen clean inside and out. Greasy smudges or foggy patches can seriously reduce visibility, especially when the sun’s low or it’s raining.

🪟 Check Your Wipers:
Worn-out wiper blades are a big no-no! Replace them if they smear or skip – they’re your best friend in wet weather.

🧊 Defrost Before You Drive:
Never set off with fogged-up or frozen windows. Use your car’s demisters, and keep a microfibre cloth handy for quick touch-ups.

💡 Let There Be Light:
Make sure all your lights are working and clean – this helps you see better and makes you easier to see too.

🚙 Don’t Overload Your Dashboard:
Keep your dashboard clutter-free and avoid hanging air fresheners or charms that can block your view.

Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic.

Motorists MUST stop at the first white line if the lights are amber or red. They should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area.

If your vehicle is over the first white line when the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area.

Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.
