🚗The oil in a car is a key element when it comes to maintaining a healthy and reliable engine - helping to maintain temperatures, lubricate components, and even affect the efficiency of your car.
🛻Over time, however, engine oil can lose its effectiveness. Sludge and dirt can build up in the system, and the oil becomes polluted with contaminants. Oil filters are there to help keep the oil as pure as possible, but the filters also begin to degrade over time - becoming clogged, and making the cleaning process for the oil less effective.
🏎No matter how well looked after your car and engine are, dirt and other deposits will form and contaminate the oil, which is why changing your oil and oil filter is such an important part of car maintenance.
🚛How often you should do so depends on the type of car that you drive, and your driving habits - although on average, every 10,000 miles or during your annual service is a good benchmark.
❓Should you change your oil and filter yourself?
Changing your engine oil can be a messy job, and require some tools and equipment to get started. Because of this, it can be a good idea to leave engine oil changes to the professionals - or build them into your annual car servicing plans.
🤦🏼‍♂️Aside from safely raising your vehicle, dealing with the oil itself can be problematic. In order to change the oil, you’ll need a bucket or pan to collect the dirty oil, and then be able to dispose of it in an environmentally responsible way.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior technician Motor Mechanic.

We are a busy, family owned garage that have been established for over 50 years in Chatham, Kent. Due to expansion we are urgently looking for an experienced mechanic who is hard working & reliable to join us.

About the role :
*Carry out minor/major repairs
*Diagnose and investigate faults
*Servicing & Tyres
*Discussing repairs and queries with customers.
*Creating quotes (training given)
* Keep work area clean & observe H&S policy at all times.
*Supporting colleagues and helping to educate any apprentices.

The applicant must have :
* Full driving licence
* Minimum 5 years experience but will consider less if the applicant has the right level of knowledge and enthusiasm for the role.
* Positive / Friendly attitude towards customers & colleagues.
* Self motivation and be able to work under pressure.
* Minimum NVQ L3 qualification or similar. Full consideration given to skilled applicants who may not have a formal qualification.
* Must be competent & have a general overall knowledge of all makes of vehicle.
* Own tools

Permanent Full-time position.

Working Hours 8.30 -5.30 Monday to Friday.
Alternate Saurday Mornings

Salary: £35,000.00 to £40,000.00 /year depending on experience & competency.

🚘Turn the steering wheel fully to the left or right. Look for the treadwear indicators which are at the bottom of the tyre grooves. If they are flush with the level of the tread, you need to replace the tyre
🚙Another good rule of thumb is the 20p test. Insert a 20p coin into the groove on the tyre. If the tread covers the outer band of the coin the tyre depth is legal. Check the tread depth is even across the tyre

What's included in a car service?

What’s included in a car service depends on the garage you go to and the type of service you pay for.

All services will involve visual checks to your car, like looking for damage to your car’s body or wheels. They’ll also include manual checks to things like your brakes and gearbox to make sure they’re working as they should.

If you have an electric or hybrid car, the checks will include your charging port, cables and connections.

Checks during a car service can include:

🔧Engine oil and oil filter
🪛Lights, tyres, bodywork and exhausts
⚙️Brakes and steering
🔨Fluid and coolant levels
🔩Suspension
🛠️Car battery
Your garage will replace certain worn car parts and fluids during your service. But how many replacement parts and changes you get depends on the type of service you book.

It is your legal requirement to have a valid MOT certificate for your vehicle.

With our easy to use online booking system, you can arrange your MOT test at a time to suit you, we will even send you an email/SMS reminder before your test is due.

Our current prices are £40.00 for Class IV or £50.00 for Class VII.

We can only accept Class 1/2/3 MOT tests by telephone so please call for availability.

1. When to get an MOT- The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either: the third anniversary of its registration or the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old.
‍
‍2. Earliest date you can get an MOT - An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.
‍
‍3. If the MOT has expired - You can’t drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught. The only exceptions are to drive it to, or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test.

Motorists without a valid MOT certificate for their vehicle can risk a fine of up to £1,000.
