Essential car checks for winter
•Battery: Cold weather reduces battery output. Test your battery, and if it’s over four years old or struggles to start, have it professionally checked.
•Tires: Check tire pressure, as it decreases in the cold. Ensure you have adequate tread depth for grip and consider switching to winter tires.
Fluids:
•Coolant: Top up the coolant and check the antifreeze ratio (a 50/50 mix is ideal) to prevent the engine from freezing and overheating.
•Oil: Check the oil level and consider a winter-grade oil if recommended by your vehicle’s handbook.
Screenwash: Fill the reservoir with a winter-grade •screenwash to prevent freezing and keep your windshield clear.
•Brakes: Winter roads can be icy, so ensure your brakes are in top shape. Have them inspected if you hear squealing, grinding, or if the car pulls to one side when braking.
Lights and visibility:
•Lights: Check all headlights, brake lights, indicators, and fog lights. Keep the lenses clean to ensure you can see and be seen in the shorter days and darker conditions.
•Wipers: Replace worn wiper blades with new ones, or winter-specific blades, as they can harden in the cold. Also, make sure your defroster and demister work properly.
