People think driving instructors charge approx Β£43 per hour and keep every penny.!!

If this were true then …...

🌱 The car survives on photosynthesis.
☁️ petrol ⛽️ is squeezed from clouds.
πŸ”§ Brake pads regenerate like lizard tails.
βš™οΈ The gearbox has unlimited lives.
πŸ“± The clutch is made by Nokia.
πŸ›ž The suspension heals itself while you’re asleep.

❌ Learners never cancel lessons last minute .
πŸ’· Nobody ever asks, β€œCan I just pay you next week as I’ve forgotten my money πŸ’° today !?”
⏰ And DVSA tests are always on time.
& the dvsa never cancel any tests last minute
πŸ’° It’s basically passive income… with dual controls. 🀣

Dear FLH drivers,

Here’s a little rant from me for the hard of understanding…

A learner driver with L plates is not a personal challenge.

They are not delaying you deliberately. They are not β€œnot trying hard enough”. They are not sitting there thinking, β€œHow can I ruin Janice’s commute this morning?”

They are LEARNING.

Which means:
They’ll hesitate.
They’ll stall.
They’ll take a junction slower than you would.
They won’t always drive at the maximum speed limit. (Maximum. Not mandatory.)

And occasionally they’ll do something spectacularly awkward and then replay it in their head at 2am for the next six months.

Oh, and can we talk about roundabouts?

Roundabouts are pressure enough for learners without someone appearing in the mirror like they’re trying to get a slipstream behind an F1 car.

Expect them to:
– miss safe gaps
– stop when they probably could’ve gone
– take a little longer deciding
– stall
– get flustered and need another attempt

Because they’re learning judgement.

What DOESN’T help is:
🚫 tailgating
🚫 revving
🚫 throwing the car into a gap behind them
🚫 overtaking aggressively
🚫 trying to pressure them into going

You know what happens when learners feel bullied?

They don’t magically become faster.

They panic.
Then they stall.
Then the positioning goes strange.
Then they miss more opportunities.
Then everyone waits even longer.

Fantastic work.

And for anyone who thinks β€œI’ll just push them on a bit” β€” please don’t take your eye off learners.

Numerous instructor cars whilst teaching have been hit because other drivers weren’t leaving space or anticipating hesitation.

Crashing into them helps absolutely nobody.

Not you.
Not the learner.
Not the instructor.
And certainly not any of our insurance premiums.

If you’re following a learner, leave room. Expect unpredictability. Expect extra braking. Expect slower decisions.

Rear-end collisions are very often found to involve the following driver not leaving enough stopping distance β€” and β€œthey hesitated” isn’t a substitute for leaving space.

Also worth remembering:

The person in that driver’s seat might already be terrified.
Our job as instructors is to keep calm, keep them safe, and build confidence.

Your job is simple… not to turn their lesson into a stress test.

And if your driving around learners involves intimidation, dangerous overtakes, mobile phone use, aggressive close-following or general stupidity:

Smile for the dashcam.

Operation Snap exists. And we will report every single incident without hesitation.

Drive like everyone around you is learning because one day they won’t be.

Give us a break, please. Being an instructor or a learner is a tough gig. Don’t make it worse!

Peace ✌🏾
