Do you ALWAYS have to give way when approaching a roundabout? πŸ€”

Not here.

The road layout separates your lane from traffic travelling around the roundabout, allowing you to continue in your lane.

This is why it’s so important to read the road markings rather than simply thinking β€œroundabout = give way.”

Would you have slowed down and tried to give way here?

Getting your position sorted early makes a huge difference when meeting traffic.

It’s not just about creating space β€” your road position helps the other driver see you earlier and understand what you’re doing.

In this lesson, Betsi initially reacts to the approaching car, but changing position earlier gives both drivers a much clearer picture of the situation.

Do you rush your gear changes? πŸš—

One of the biggest differences can simply be relaxing your hand.

Instead of gripping or forcing the gear lever, use your fingers to guide it into position. Combine that with building your speed progressively and you give yourself more time to make each change.

As you hear in this lesson:

β€œIt's so much better when I'm not rushing it.”

Sometimes the technique isn't the problem β€” the rush is.

Are you slowing down for roundabouts too early? πŸš—

When you're approaching a roundabout on a faster road, you don't necessarily need to start slowing down as soon as you see it.

In this lesson we're travelling on a 50 mph dual carriageway, approaching a roundabout and then exiting into a 20 mph zone.

The challenge is choosing the right point to come off the accelerator, check your mirrors and progressively reduce your speed β€” without slowing unnecessarily early.

Good approach planning means making progress and being ready for what's ahead.

When do you normally start slowing down for a roundabout?

Your road position is talking to other drivers πŸš—

Where you position your car doesn't just control where you're going β€” it can also communicate your intentions.

Taking a more central position when appropriate can discourage another vehicle from trying to squeeze past on either side when there isn't enough room.

But remember: check your mirrors before changing position and make sure it's safe first.

Good positioning isn't just about following the road. It's about managing the space around you.

Struggling to build speed and change gears smoothly on a dual carriageway? 🚘

Rather than trying to accelerate through the gears as quickly as possible, build your speed progressively. This gives you more time to make each gear change smoothly, stay in control and check that it's safe before increasing your speed again.

Small increases in speed can make a BIG difference to how smooth and controlled your gear changes feel.

πŸ‘‰ Do you find changing gears while accelerating difficult?

31/08/2026

Roundabouts can feel difficult when you're learning to drive, especially when you're trying to manage your speed, gears and observations all at the same time.

This real driving lesson shows how to approach a roundabout downhill, including when to check your mirrors, how to reduce your speed, choosing the appropriate gear and deciding when it's safe to enter.

The aim is to get the car prepared early, giving you more time to concentrate on what really matters β€” looking, assessing the traffic and making a safe decision.
