It’s illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send or receive data, while driving or riding a motorcycle.

This means you must not use a device in your hand for any reason, whether online or offline.

For example, you must not text, make calls, take photos or videos, or browse the web.

The law still applies to you if you’re:

stopped at traffic lights
queuing in traffic
supervising a learner driver
driving a car that turns off the engine when you stop moving
holding and using a device that’s offline or in flight mode

Exceptions
You can use a device held in your hand if:

you need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop
you’re safely parked
you’re making a contactless payment in a vehicle that is not moving, for example at a drive-through restaurant
you’re using the device to park your vehicle remotely
Using devices hands-free
You can use devices with hands-free access, as long as you do not hold them at any time during usage. Hands-free access means using, for example:

a Bluetooth headset
voice command
a dashboard holder or mat
a windscreen mount
a built-in sat nav
The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.

Staying in full control of your vehicle
You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted.

Penalties
You can get 6 penalty points and a £200 fine if you hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send and receive data while driving or riding a motorcycle.

You’ll also lose your licence if you passed your driving test in the last 2 years.

You can get 3 penalty points if you do not have a full view of the road and traffic ahead or proper control of the vehicle.

You can also be taken to court where you can:

be banned from driving or riding
get a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if you’re driving a lorry or bus)

Your side mirrors are more than just mirrors — they’re your extra set of eyes on the road 👀🚗

Learning how to adjust and use them correctly can help reduce blind spots, improve lane changes, and make every drive safer.

✅ Check mirrors every few seconds
✅ Watch for vehicles in the next lane
✅ Always look before changing lanes
✅ Use mirrors + head checks together

Good mirror habits = safer driving from day one 💯

I have finally passed my driving test first time in Cardiff, taught by John at Navigator Driving Training and I am so grateful and happy that I found an instructor that not only taught me how to drive safely and calmly but also helped grow my confidence and to believe in my self as someone who deals with anxiety.

After each lesson I always came away feeling more knowledgeable of cars and the roads, where all my questions were met with answers and were never considered “silly questions”.

If you’re looking for an instructor who will not only physically teach you to drive but be there to support you on your driving journey, go with Navigator Driving Training, you won’t regret it.

It was such a wonderful experience and lessons went from being something I was nervous for to something I looked forward to!

Did you know that lower gears are sometimes needed for bends in the road? 🚗

When you learn to drive a manual car, choosing the correct gear for a bend is important for keeping the car balanced, controlled and safe. Good driving instructors will always teach learner drivers to plan ahead and read the road early.

Think about:

Sharp bends and turns
Parked vehicles
Oncoming traffic
Following traffic
Pedestrians
Even the time of day and visibility

Planning ahead is a key skill for passing the driving test and becoming a safe driver for life.

Your driving test examiner doesn’t know who you are.
They don’t know if you can drive safely.
They don’t know your experience level, confidence, or state of mind.
In many driving test cars, they may not even have dual controls if something goes wrong.

Yet every day, driving examiners assess learner drivers and make difficult decisions to keep roads safe. That’s why preparation, observation, planning ahead, and safe driving skills are so important when learning to drive a car.

Respect your driving test examiner, stay calm during your driving test, and prove through your driving that you are a safe, confident, and responsible driver.

Perfect for learner drivers preparing for the UK driving test and anyone wanting to improve their driving skills and driving confidence.

Learning to drive? 🚗👀

When you learn to drive a car, you should normally stay in the left lane unless overtaking or turning right. Many learner drivers use the right lane unnecessarily, which can lead to poor road positioning, confusion, and driving faults during the UK driving test.

In this video, we explain the driving theory behind lane discipline, correct driving position, and why some drivers stay in the right lane for too long. Understanding proper lane usage is an essential driving skill for safe driving and passing your driving test.

Ask your driving instructor during your driving lesson about correct lane positioning, overtaking rules, and how to improve your observation and planning ahead while driving.

Perfect for learner drivers, beginner drivers, and anyone wanting better driving skills and safer driving habits.

Learning to drive in Swansea? 🚗👀

When leaving the driving test centre at Swansea, don’t fail your driving test at this easy roundabout. Many learner drivers lose marks here by choosing the wrong lane or not listening carefully to the driving examiner’s instructions.

During your driving lesson and driving test, focus on observation, road positioning, lane discipline, and planning ahead. Follow the correct lane markings, stay calm under pressure, and avoid last-second steering decisions that could lead to serious driving faults.

These driving tips will help learner drivers improve confidence, build safer driving skills, and prepare to pass the UK driving test first time.

Do you know how to demonstrate how to drive safely and how to drive a car responsibly. When turning at blind junctions, a second check makes it safe. Always make sure and then double check.
