A windscreen that won’t clear on cold mornings?

Turn your air con on with the heater. It dries the air and clears the glass much faster, even in winter. If it isn’t making much difference, the system may need a regas, which we can do here.

A clean inside screen also mists less, so give it a wipe with a microfibre cloth, now we're in winter it's probably best to keep one in your car at all times!

Your tyres have a date stamped on them. Look for a four-digit code on the sidewall: “2319” means the 23rd week of 2019.

Rubber hardens with age even when there’s plenty of tread left, so tyres over five or six years old are worth having checked, especially on cars that don’t do many miles.

⇒Make sure your headlights are clean and properly aimed, because dazzling oncoming drivers is easier than you’d think.
⇒Wipe the inside of the windscreen to cut glare.

Lift your wipers and run a finger along the rubber. If it’s split or smearing, it’s time for new blades.

Clear the leaves out of the scuttle panel below the windscreen too, because blocked drains there can let water into the cabin.

The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but grip drops off noticeably below 3mm.

You can check it with a 20p coin: if you can see the outer band when it’s in the groove, it’s worth getting the tyres looked at...While you’re there, check for cracks or bulges on the sidewalls too.

The mornings are getting darker, so now’s a good time for a quick lights check.

Ask someone to stand behind the car while you try your brake lights and indicators, then walk round the front to check both headlights and the fog lights.

A blown bulb is a quick fix, but it’s also one of the most common reasons for an MOT failure. If one’s out, pop in and we’ll sort it while you wait.
