This week we had a 2009 Kia in the workshop with a fault that needed some proper investigation rather than simply throwing parts at it.

As you can see from the video, sometimes finding the actual cause of a problem means getting stuck in, testing, checking and working through the fault step by step. 🧰🔍

🔍 FAULT FINDER FRIDAY! 🔍

This week’s patient — a VW Scirocco 🚗

The customer brought the car into us with two complaints:

🔊 A noise while driving
🫨 A noticeable shake/judder when braking

Time to find the fault… 👀

After getting the Scirocco on the ramp and carrying out our checks, we found the problem at the rear:

❌ Rear brake discs badly warped
❌ Rear brake pads worn almost metal-to-metal

The warped discs were causing the shake through the car under braking, while the severely worn pads were contributing to the unwanted noise.

Another fault found before it turned into a bigger — and potentially more expensive — problem. 🔧

🔥 Volkswagen Golf GTI – Walnut Blasting Transformation! 🔥

This 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTI with 94,000 miles came into Acorn Garage for a walnut blast to remove years of carbon build-up from the inlet valves.

As you can see from the photos, the carbon deposits had built up significantly, restricting airflow and affecting engine performance. After carrying out a full walnut blast, the difference was immediately noticeable.

🔧 Another timing chain job completed at Acorn Garage! 🔧

This 2013 Vauxhall Corsa came in with a noticeable rattling noise from the engine. After further investigation, we found the timing chain had worn excessively and one of the timing chain tensioner guides had actually broken up and ended up in the sump!

Ignoring a timing chain rattle can lead to serious engine damage and a much bigger repair bill if the chain jumps timing.

✅ New timing chain kit fitted

✅ Broken guide pieces removed from the sump
✅ Back on the road running quietly again

This Hyundai came into Acorn Garage with excessively worn rear trailing arm bushes, causing unwanted movement in the suspension and affecting the vehicle’s handling and stability.

Many garages would recommend replacing the complete trailing arms, but after inspecting the vehicle, we were able to press out the worn bushes and fit new ones instead.

⚠️ Don’t Ignore That Noise! ⚠️

Strange noise coming from your car? A squeak, grind, knock or rattle is often your vehicle’s way of telling you something isn’t right.

This customer had noticed a noise from their brakes but wasn’t too concerned as their MOT was due soon and they hoped it would last until then. Unfortunately, as you can see from the photos, the brakes had been running metal-on-metal for some time, causing excessive wear and creating a serious safety concern.

The good news? We caught it before it became even more expensive. We fitted new brakes, cleaned and prepared everything correctly, and got the vehicle back on the road safely – braking like it just left the factory. ✅

🔧 Clutch & Flywheel Replacement Completed 🔧

This 2015 Citroën Picasso came into Acorn Garage with clutch-related concerns. Upon inspection, we found the clutch was excessively worn and nearing the end of its service life.

To restore smooth and reliable operation, we replaced both the clutch and flywheel with quality components, ensuring the vehicle is back on the road performing as it should.
