Today marks 30 years of the theory test. 🎉

On 1 July 1996, a separate written theory test was introduced, replacing Highway Code questions that had previously been asked during the practical driving test. 📝

3 decades on, it remains a vital part of the driver testing and training regime and makes sure that people have the theory they need to drive safely and responsibly. ✅

Please be aware….

Booking your driving test? Make sure you’re doing it the right way. ✅

Since 12 May, it has been against the law for anyone but the learner driver to book a driving test. Using unofficial apps, bots or automated tools also breaks the terms and conditions of our booking service.

We've already cancelled 450 tests where tests have been booked outside the new rules – and we're continuing to monitor activity closely. 💪

If misuse of the booking system is identified, we can cancel your booking and suspend your ability to manage your test online.

Our priority is to make the system fair for every learner and to stop you being exploited by third parties. The only way to book and manage a test is through GOV.UK. 💻

Something we need to be mindful of…

Be aware of blind spots. The left turning car in the picture is an example of both the motorcyclist and junction car being hidden from each other.

Any areas that are hidden from the driver either by the car's bodywork or areas not visible in the mirrors.

I really cannot see how this is going to help the current test situation, but it’s coming into effect the end of march. Please don’t book a driving test until you have discussed it with your driving instructor.

A change counts as:

• changing the date or time

• changing the test centre

• swapping a test between 2 learners
