Basic vehicle safety check questions, often referred to as the "Show me / Tell me questions" have been a requirement on the practical driving test for sometime now.

It is also important that drivers have knowledge of these and can carry out the checks so they can ensure their vehicle is safe and legal to use on the road.

I have put this document together to give some additional information to new drivers over and above what is required on the driving test.

The driver of this BMW told officers in Wisbech he didn’t realise his insurance had been cancelled.

This is strange, because when officers from the neighbourhood team searched the car, they found a letter from the insurance company telling him exactly that.

As they were dealing with this a woman approached them riding on an eScooter. She looked familiar, very familiar. Officers had spoken to her the previous day and given her words of advice about, you guessed it, riding an eScooter in public. Having clearly not listened the eScooter seized along with the BMW.

It is illegal to use an eScooter on a road or footpath unless it is as part of an approved government scheme in cities such as Cambridge. Outside of these approved schemes, they should only be used on private land.

Research has shown that drivers using a phone at the wheel (even handsfree) …

o Are four times more likely to be involved in a collision
o Are far less likely to notice and react to hazards
o Take much longer to react to any hazards they do see
o Look directly at hazards yet fail to see them
o Show poor lane discipline
o Make more variable speed choices

In fact, their driving is impaired to a similar degree as that of a drink driver.

Thank you to all the drivers who we don’t need to take action against, we all need to do our bit to keep ourselves and other road users safe.
