Competence versus confidence.

Every instructor meets pupils who are brimming with confidence but still need prompting to check blind spots or manage speed on approach. We also meet competent drivers whose self-doubt makes them feel unready.

When a practical test date looms, our role isn't to guess the outcome or issue blunt verdicts. Our role is to make learning visible, objective, and agreed upon.

If you are preparing PDIs for Part 3, getting ready for a Standards Check, or simply want smoother, calmer conversations around test readiness, check out our latest guide in the Teach Driving Better series.

Have you ever had — or been — a trainee who wanted to be told the answer rather than coached towards it?

I ask because I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and I suspect it is more common than the industry likes to admit.

There is a particular type of trainee who will work hard, turn up on time, and genuinely try — but who fundamentally wants a script. A checklist. A set of instructions they can follow on the day and tick the box.

The problem is not their commitment. The problem is that the job they are training for cannot be done with a script.

Real learners do not follow scripts.

And the Standards Check — thankfully — does not reward instructors who are running one.

So here is my question, open and honest:

When you trained, were you coached or were you instructed? And looking back — which approach served you better?

Drop your thoughts below. No wrong answers — this is a conversation worth having. 👇

Spoon-fed answers might help you scrape a test, but they leave you stranded with real learners. Here is why holistic coaching matters.

"My test is booked in three weeks... will I pass?"

When test pressure takes over, lesson quality often drops. We start rehearsing familiar test routes or repeating manoeuvres just to feel safe, rather than tackling the real areas where the pupil still relies on our help.

A test date is a deadline—not a learning plan.

Our new article explores:
• The difference between task completion and true independent competence
• Using structured reflection so the pupil sees their own support needs
• Turning a difficult verdict into a productive learning plan

I have been training trainee driving instructors for a long time.

And there is a pattern I keep seeing — one that concerns me far more than any upcoming changes to Part 2 or 3.

It is the trainee who wants to be told how to pass.

Give me the checklist. Give me the script. Tell me what to say when the pupil does that.

Here is the bitter irony: we are training people to become coaches — professionals who will one day sit beside a learner and draw understanding out of them, guide them towards their own conclusions, build genuine independence behind the wheel.

And yet, in their own training, some trainees are desperately looking for someone to just tell them what to do.

I have watched it happen in my own school. A trainee struggles. They encounter a concept that requires them to sit with some discomfort and genuinely think. Then another trainer comes along — slick, confident, full of quick fixes. "Just do this in your part 3. Say this. Remember that trigger." And the trainee thinks: brilliant, this is exactly what I needed.

It is not what they needed. It is what they wanted. There is a profound difference.

The quick fix will get some of them through the department's route test. It will not carry them through a Standards Check eighteen months later. It will not make them a good coach. And it will certainly not build the kind of career that sustains a thriving school.

Knowledge. Driving. Teaching. These are not three separate modules to tick off. They are three interlocking pillars — and Part 3 without the foundations of Parts 1 and 2 embedded into everything you do is a performance, not a qualification.

I have written about this properly, because I think it needs saying clearly.

If you are a PDI, an ADI, or someone training trainee instructors — this one is for you.

Be honest: once you’ve had your green badge for a while, it’s remarkably easy to run on autopilot. A pupil hops in, you ask what they fancy doing, you drive around, and you react to errors as they happen.

The problem? Driving lessons must be goal-focused, not fault-focused.

When a pupil struggles on a multi-lane roundabout or freezes at a junction, winging an explanation off the cuff rarely sticks. What transforms a lesson is visual clarity combined with real coaching pedagogy.

The DTE-Elite Lesson Planner (Instructor’s Edition) wasn’t created merely to help trainees scrape through Part 3 or survive a Standards Check. It was built for the qualified, experienced ADI who wants to deliver premier-standard lessons day in, day out:

Dual-Action Layout: Professional, clear overhead diagrams facing your structured coaching notes, core competencies, and teaching prompts.
Instant Client-Centred Coaching: Targeted Q&A prompts ready to hand (like: "What would you do if you were in the wrong lane approaching a roundabout?") so your pupils learn to think, evaluate risk, and solve problems themselves.
Myth Busters & Practical Tips: Real-world pedagogical guidance from Dave Foster MA, Dip.DI, grounding your in-car tuition strictly in DVSA syllabus standards.
Dry-Wipe Visuals: Draw routes, lane discipline, and hazard paths directly with your markers—then wipe clean for the next lesson.
You wouldn’t expect a surgeon or an architect to work without their core instruments. Your in-car toolkit should reflect the standard of instruction you pride yourself on.

Train Smarter. Teach Better. Pass With Confidence.
