DUAL CONTROLS
William Stack has saved my life on numerous occasions... I love him lol

The first US patent for a dual-control attachment was filed April 21, 1937 and patented July 25, 1939. That's the system you’ll recognise today in modern learner cars.

William Stack of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, USA invented it.

The patent:
Filed: April 21, 1937
Application No. 138,234
Patented: July 25, 1939 — as US2166978A — Dual control attachment for automobiles

It was described as:
"a novel attachment whereby an instructor teaching a novice to drive an automobile may himself operate the clutch, brake and accelerator in any required manner"

Stack's design was an arched frame that bolted to the foot-board with just two bolts, with three rock shafts giving the instructor on the right his own set of clutch, brake and accelerator pedals connected to the learner's set on the left — so it could be quickly fitted to any make of car and moved from car to car.

So while true factory dual-controls date back to 1906 with the Academy car in London, Stack invented the removable add-on dual-control unit that became the standard for driving schools.

FYI Cyclists in Caernarfon!

Under Highway Code Rule 143, bicycles are counted as vehicles:
One-way streets. Traffic MUST travel in the direction indicated by signs. Buses and/or cycles may have a contraflow lane.
So you can't ride the wrong way up a one-way street just because you're on a bike - that's listed as something you must not do when cycling.

The only times you can legally go against the flow are when the street is specifically exempted for cycles:
1. Contraflow cycle lane - you'll see a marked lane going the opposite way to motor traffic, often with blue signs. 2. "Except cycles" plate - under the No Entry sign at the end of the one-way street. The government guidance allows councils to 'exempt' cycles this way, sometimes worded as "No entry except cycles".
If there is no contraflow lane or "Except cycles" / "Except cyclists" plate, you must dismount and push your bike on the pavement, or take another route - riding against traffic is an offence under the Road Traffic Act and you could be fined, plus it's treated as careless/dangerous cycling if there's a collision.

In Caernarfon most of the old town one-ways don't have a contraflow, so you'd need to stick to the signed direction unless you see that exception plate.

“WHY WON’T AN INSTRUCTOR JUST TAKE ME TO TEST IN THEIR CAR?”

We get asked this more often than you’d think — especially when someone’s own instructor or car "suddenly" becomes unavailable.

The simple answer is:

Because we would be putting our own professional licence on the line.
Not just our car.

When we take a pupil to test, the examiner records details including the instructor’s ADI badge number and the vehicle registration, and our pupils’ test results contribute to the information the DVSA holds about our performance.

So if we haven’t taught you, we simply don’t know your driving standard.

We don’t know your observations, judgement, control, decision-making or how you react under pressure. A quick hour before your test isn’t enough for us to confidently put our name, car and professional reputation behind your driving.

And there can be consequences for us.

If concerns are raised about an instructor’s standards, they can be called for a DVSA standards check — an assessment of our ability to teach safely and effectively.

An ADI has limited attempts to demonstrate the required standard, and ultimately our registration as a driving instructor can be at risk if we repeatedly fail to meet it.

That registration is our livelihood. It’s what legally allows us to provide paid driving tuition.

So when an instructor says they won’t simply lend their car or take someone they’ve never taught to test, they’re not being awkward or trying to make you spend more money.

They’re protecting you, the examiner, other road users, their car, their professional standards and their livelihood.

We want you to pass — but more importantly, we need to know you’re safe enough to deserve that licence.

Driving Schools are "schools" by name, we teach people first and foremost.

Driving Schools are not a car hire service.
Firms like "Arnold Clark" will hire you a car for test purposes.

You can also take your test in your own car so long as it is insured, taxed, mot'd and is road worthy.

1. Be patient on the road and always show consideration of others.

2. Take your time learning – always remember you will still be learning to drive even after you pass your test.

3. Never lose concentration, ever, eyes on the road and your surroundings, look with your eyes and listen with your ears.
Stop looking elsewhere.

4. Watch your speed – don’t go too fast but make sure it’s appropriate for the road and traffic conditions.
DONT BE PUSHED FASTER BY TAILGATERS!

5. REMEMBER mirror, signal (if required), manoeuvre AND check your blind spots.

6. Be aware of other road users and NEVER assume that a left or right signal means they will be definitely going that way!

7. Always keep your distance and leave some tarmac between you and the car in front.

8. Don’t panic and plan ahead in good time, dont leave it till the last minute and then brake hard.
Slow down sooner if there is a hazzard ahead.

9. Practice as much as possible but also have a qualified instructor teaching you properly, book your test on their say so, not your parents or friends.

10. Learn lane discipline and which lane to approach roundabouts and junctions.

11. Be confident, not cocky.

12. Book professional instruction, you wouldn't learn to fly with Uncle John now would you?
