Service time in Stevenage

Long over due on this one, the brake drums had not been taken off in a long time.

You have to remove all the old grease as moisture gets in there and bearings will suffer as you can see on this one.

Give it a thorough clean, I am not a fan of this copper grease that folks keep squirting everywhere, as all the brake dust sticks to it,

the manufacturer doesn’t use it on the new ones and the brake dust falls out of the drum as it goes along.

This one has no wear on the brake components, therefore it has not seen much use, big tick box for the new owners.

Superdry damp wise, minor bit by front window, but very localised, move an inch then set as a bone.

The damper was a cause for concern, but once removed it had plenty of force in it, easy to change on these ones as it has the later 131R Alko setup. One bolt and the hitch/ drawbar pulls out, easy peasy and will improve your towing experience

Chimney cowl, top ring that the gutter rail is screwed onto

& to top it off, It didn’t smell that great,

So out with the rot, wind up the welder, get the job done and off she goes

Service time,
New brake shoes,
New wheels and tyres
New Alko brake drums, as they were very worn, but it’s travelled all around Europe over 28 years so they have lasted a while

Minor section of 20 x 20 mm box section in front of the near side wheel
Scraped off loose paint, wire brushed, sprayed with a rust treatment, then hand painted the chassis in black metal paint

Good for another decade, but with the ferry prices probably be staying in the UK

92 Familia serviced and checked over near Wisbech.
The owners are having difficulty moving it about so unfortunately it’s time to say goodbye.

What can I say, excellent underneath never had any repairs and better still it does not need any.

Exterior very presentable, paintwork excellent as the lower silver paint normally look very tired on these models.

Interior super clean, no dogs or kids writing on tables, I jest, but it is super clean and a pleasure to work on.

Just look at the brake drums and linings, all original with no wear lip or wear at all so it hasn’t been towed to the sunnier parts of Europe and back.

The Eriba is stored at a storage facility and the owners were lovely and very hospitable, we had such a giggle whilst I was working, that I didn’t leave until gone 9 pm and we nearly got locked in, so a long day and then driving back through the Thetford forest in the dark

So much easier to cut out the rot and weld in new metal with the floor up as the bottom
Inch of the upright always rots so no point just welding from underneath.

The floor is one huge section from the front to level with the rear legs, this is screwed down at the factory before they fit the roof on,
I cut this in half as the front section was rotten, so didn’t expect the rest of it to be so huge, this is definitely not going to fit through the door aperture, as with the kitchen unit,

Please have a good look underneath around the perimeter before you hand over your bag of cash

I may need to rent a skip as this is gonna get messy

A 1975 Pan having a chassis service in Cambridgeshire, this has a lovely light wood interior, pity I didn’t take a pic, but you may see it at a vintage show.
On the whole it’s not in bad condition, but has a few holes on the near side outer ring, that will need cutting out and replacing later in the year.

Brakes all ok, the asbestos linings can come away from the shoes on these early ones, so don’t be tempted to clean these with an airline, these are all ok, just cleaned out the 2 shades of grease and put some new stuff on the bearings, then back together.

Eriba also used a chipboard floor underneath around 75 to 77, which crumbles and is a nightmare to try and stabilise.

Normally the floor is roughly 34 mm thick sandwich, made up of 5 mm ply top, 25 mm polystyrene, then 4 mm ply underneath, but this was ply top and chipboard at the bottom.
Back in the day when I bought an oldie and saw a chipboard floor, it was always a, oh know, not another one as every time you touch them, you end up with a big pile of wood chip on the floor.

A couple of mobile services this week, one in the muddy part of east Suffolk, howling easterly wind from the North Sea.

This is stored on grass with no cover, but is done dry, even the chassis, we are convinced it must be the wind from the North Sea that keeps it dry and stops the damp spores from forming.

Number two - No mud here in West Suffolk on a new housing development.

This 2005 Familia is stored on tarmac between two walls so another chilly easterly wind this morning.

The customer stated, that she had never bought a caravan before and has no idea what to look for.

Well after working only on eriba caravans for 25 years, I think next time I go to view an eriba, I will ask her to come along as this is in excellent condition, underneath is like brand new, even the axle, super clean with all the original paint.

It’s that good, that after 5 minutes i was thinking about calling it a day and going home for breakfast

Anyhow chassis service and habitation check, then iron out a few niggles like adjusting tension on blinds, tightening screws, lubricating the expensive concertina hinges on the locker cupboards.

I always home in on the little things, that I see have broken on other examples so to prevent them from breaking or mainly rusting on yours.

Then the typical roof seal, that was falling down in one corner and drops every time it gets wet. I cleaned the poptop, the roof, the guttering and sealed the rubber back all the way around the poptop with sikaflex.

The gas regulator was restricting flow, new one fitted, heater cover off, brushed it down with a paint brush, then a serious blast with the airline and a hoover helps to remove all the years of dust and hair from our furry friends, these units get very hot so good to pull the cover back, lift up and see how bad it is.

Next was the back of the fridge, again lots of cobwebs and bits of rust particles getting in the burner,

So 9 hours later and time for a large portion of fish and chips

Lovely combination, all done and ready to hit the road
