It’s not all vintage Eriba’s here in Suffolk.

We collected this 2014 Triton from a caravan storage facility near Stamford and took it back to our base for the following…

A top to bottom wash and detail, those poptop roofs do tend to get overlooked as you need to be ok on a tall step ladder and have long arms like Mr Tickle to reach in the middle 😂

After a day to recover we gave it a chassis service, habitation / health check to prep it to be sold on by the owners.

This has a fully galvanised chassis and it is a 2014, good to know… as some of the earlier noughties ones were only partially galvanised. Approx 20% at best.

This was lovely and clean to work on, no dustpans full of rust and crumbly floors.

Flushed everything out and then back on the road. As it’s fairly lightweight, we used the little caddy van, which was more than capable of towing it with ease.

This was serviced last year so the big question is what did he actually do as decades of old cobwebs and an inner bearing that required a blowtorch to remove tells me, that it had not been inspected for a good 20 years

Very local job today changing Alko Friction Pads & the bellows on a Eriba with the
AKS 2004/3004 stabiliser hitch

If you have a push down hitch and it makes a scary noise when you are towing simply replace your pads in the hitch then that’s ticked that box.

But, Don’t be tempted to buy the unbranded ones when comparing the price, as it’s like drinking your favourite brand of tea with coffee mate instead of milk, 🤮

Fit the Alko ones then forget

I know you can lightly sand them, but if yours look like this I wouldn’t go there

A customer asked me to prep his Eriba before he put it up for sale.

We gave it a service and hab check, changed all three tyres, fitted a new leisure battery, a new safety trip switch, a new chimney kit as they get a bit brittle with age.

Gave it a thorough wash and clean inside.

It’s a 2003 430 GT, a 3 berth triton, highly recommended as it has not seen a lot of use.

I like this size of Eriba as I find it easy to tow, next one up is a tad on the heavy side

If you are looking for a 3 berth I will pass on your details, but no doubt you will see it advertised with lots of pics shortly

Service time for this cracker in North Essex.

2021 Ocean Drive, couple of niggles with a brake overheating and DIY previous owner adding an extra socket with no earth as only used twin core flex wiring hacked into another socket wire. This customer was pleased that we pointed this out which I noticed once I took the hubcap off and when I used a socket tester to check for correct wiring polarity.

These have self adjusting brakes so when you pull on the handbrake and the caravan goes back a tad, ( slight slope on your driveway etc )then the handbrake goes higher, the little kicker as I call it rotates the adjuster one notch and makes the brake shoes closer to the drum and these were binding a bit more than the other side.

Slightly long winded description, but I am not a fan of this setup post 2015 and we are seeing more problems with brakes overheating due to it.

I would recommend just touching your wheel when you stop off at a services to make sure they are not red hot, if they are, let it cool down, then if you can jack it up and see if the wheel rotates freely,

If you don’t fancy messing about
2 options, 1). bangers and cash style, hit the drum with a hammer as they could just be sticking(older eriba)

Or if you are keen and want to get to your destination without any more headaches

With a flat screwdriver, back off the brake shoes a bit, it’s behind the wheel, on the backing plate look for a green rubber b**g, pull it out and you will see a cogged wheel like on a old clock, turn it a bit, one way will tighten it up, the other will move the shoes away from the drums, you’ll figure it out then your Eriba will be a happy camper…

On the road again East Suffolk bound, Cambs Eriba’s saved a puck L from a potential aluminium sheet wrap at the front.

So front window, two seals down and the caravan engineer, who certainly knows his stuff gave up as the window would not push in at the middle top and bottom and the generic seal would not pull back over the wall board. Trust me, if you can stick with the old seal do so.

They called an automotive window specialist, he said no chance and walked away, ao you guessed it they called me yesterday afternoon.

Got there after 10, was back on the A14 before 12, done and dusted, window and insert in, this is a large window being a Puck L and they can be a nightmare as the copy rubber seals are thicker than the original hymer ones, certainly not like for like, but after about 50 of the damn things and stupid hours wasted faffing about you eventually figure it out.

Another Eriba escaped the scrap man’s grasp or the banger racers 5 minutes of fame.

Poppy was too good and well loved for that, no way they said,, so she arrived here for a structural overhaul, Suffolk steel delivered a truck load of new metal and the big mig welder got a serious workout.

Ant infestations, bugs, damp, it was pretty grim once you lifted the wallboards away, mainly at the front part so thankfully not where they were sleeping.

Crazy amount of hours later, then off she goes for another decade of memories .

Called out to repair an Eriba puck at a services on the A1 as the nearside wheel fell off on route.

It was towed 300 yards to the service station on its brake drum, difficult situation on a busy road.

Long and short of it, the wheel bolts had been loose for a long time as the wheel centre had worn a groove in the brake drum, 3 bolts eventually fell out and the last bolt sheared off, the wheel holes are also oval.

The spare wheel was shredded and damaged from a previous outing so that could not be fitted, plus they had a sheared bolt in the drum.

So They called me, 35 degrees, Friday afternoon, no air con in my caddy van, but hey ho I can manage so came out with a spare brake drum, bearings, wheel bolts, puck wheel with good tyre.

30 minutes of fettling, bending back the side panel, checking the axle was not damaged, then off they went.

I put some red cross check on the bolts so they can visually see if they have moved or been tampered with. I recommend keeping a 19 mm bar in the van to just test a few bolts as part of your towing checklist.

They have also booked it in for a service in September and we will be fitting 3 new tyres, bearings to make sure it’s fit for road.

Out of curiosity I walked up the A1 at a said 300 yards marker point following the scratches on the road and bingo the wheel was there, plus remnants of the wheel spat.

Wheel is knackered, only fit for rolling a puck around the yard.
