πŸ”§ ARE YOU TRAINING YOUR TEAM OR JUST SENDING THEM ON COURSES?

Training shouldn’t just happen when a certificate expires, a new piece of equipment arrives or there’s suddenly a skills gap in the workshop.

For garage owners and managers, building a team that can keep pace with the industry means thinking about development all year round.

In our latest blog, we look at how creating a genuine training culture can help you:
πŸ”§ Keep skills current as vehicle technology changes
πŸ“ˆ Develop technicians from within your existing team
πŸ“ Build clearer development plans
🀝 Improve retention by investing in your people
πŸš— Make sure your workshop has the skills it needs for the future

It’s about moving away from one-off training and thinking about where your workshop, and your people, need to be next.

How are you developing the skills within your workshop?

When you’re running a busy garage, training can easily become something you deal with when the need arises.

πŸ’‘ TECH TIP TUESDAY

An electric or hybrid vehicle that appears switched off may still present serious hazards.

For emergency, roadside and recovery personnel, the key is to identify the vehicle and understand the risks before taking action.

⚑ Look for warning signs and identify the vehicle/system type
πŸ”§ Follow the correct isolation and shutdown procedures
🚨 Consider the hazards at the scene before approaching or handling the vehicle
🦺 Follow appropriate first-response safety procedures

With electric and hybrid vehicles becoming increasingly common on UK roads, knowing how to respond safely at an incident or recovery scene is an increasingly important skill.

Our Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management for Emergency & Recovery Personnel covers EV hazards, safe isolation and shutdown, first-response protocols and identifying warning signs and system types.

πŸ“° IN THE NEWS | Are independent garages in trouble?

An interesting read from CAT Magazine this week looking at some of the challenges currently facing independent garages across the UK.

Rising costs, an ageing workforce, changing customer expectations and the continued transition towards electric vehicles are all putting pressure on the sector.
But for us, one of the biggest points is the importance of keeping skills and knowledge moving with the industry.

Vehicles are changing. Technology is changing. The work coming through workshop doors is changing too.

For garage owners, investing in the skills of your existing team isn't just about gaining another qualification – it's about making sure your workshop has the capability and confidence to take on the work of tomorrow.

Definitely worth a read πŸ‘‡

What do you think – what's the biggest challenge facing independent garages at the moment?

Why mounting problems mean independent garages could soon disappear from Britain's towns and cities

πŸ”§ WORKSHOP INSIGHT | The job isn't finished until the paperwork is

In a busy workshop, it's easy to focus on getting the vehicle repaired, tested and back to the customer.

But accurate records are part of doing the job properly too.

Whether it's an MOT, diagnostic work, calibration, inspection or repair, make sure the relevant information is recorded clearly while the details are still fresh.

That means:

πŸ“ Recording what was checked and what was found
πŸ”§ Documenting the work carried out
πŸ“‹ Keeping reports and supporting evidence where required
βœ… Making sure records are complete before closing the job

Good record keeping protects the technician, the workshop and the customer – and makes life considerably easier if a question is raised later.

How good is your workshop at completing the paperwork as you go rather than coming back to it later?

πŸ’‘ Tech Tip Tuesday

ADAS doesn't have to be damaged to be affected.

Work such as wheel alignment, suspension repairs, windscreen replacement or changes to vehicle geometry can potentially affect the position or operation of ADAS sensors.

πŸ”§ The important bit? Know when calibration may be required.

Understanding where ADAS systems and sensors are fitted, what they do and why correct calibration matters is becoming increasingly important for everyone working around modern vehicles, not just the technician carrying out the calibration.

A little awareness can help you recognise when further checks or specialist work may be needed.

Our Level 1 Award in ADAS Awareness is a half-day, theory-based course designed to provide that foundation, with no formal entry requirements and suitability for both technical and non-technical staff.

πŸ”§ IN THE NEWS - AI is making its way into the workshop

AI might be dominating conversations across plenty of industries, but what does it actually mean for technicians?

Bosch is introducing an AI assistant into its ESI[tronic] diagnostic software, designed to help technicians identify faults and find relevant repair information more quickly.

As vehicles become increasingly complex, tools like this could help technicians cut down the time spent searching through technical information and focus more quickly on diagnosing and repairing the vehicle.

But the technology is only part of the equation.

Understanding the information, knowing what to test and having the technical knowledge to make the right repair decisions still comes down to the person using it.

What do you think? Do you see AI becoming a useful everyday tool in the workshop – or are you yet to be convinced?

Bosch is updating its ESI diagnostic software with an AI-based assistant designed to streamline fault identification and vehicle maintenance for independent

πŸ”§ WORKSHOP INSIGHT: DON’T LET THE ROUTINE BECOME AUTOMATIC

When you inspect the same types of vehicles every day, it’s easy to fall into a routine.

But routine shouldn’t mean rushing.

A consistent inspection process helps make sure the basics don’t get missed – particularly across areas such as brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres and chassis.

Take the extra moment to:

πŸ”§ Follow the same inspection sequence every time.
πŸ‘€ Look properly rather than assuming something is OK because it usually is.
πŸ“ Record defects and findings accurately.
🚐 Consider the overall condition of the vehicle, not just individual components.

Experience makes you quicker. A good process makes sure you stay thorough.

That combination matters when you're responsible for assessing whether a vehicle is roadworthy.

What’s one check you never skip, no matter how busy the workshop gets?
