🚗 DPF SYSTEMS – THE DO’S & DON’TS
Modern diesel vehicles are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), designed to capture harmful soot from the exhaust system. To prevent the filter from becoming blocked, the vehicle must regularly complete a regeneration cycle, which burns away the accumulated soot.
To help protect your DPF:
✅ Use the correct manufacturer-approved low-ash engine oil and keep the vehicle properly serviced.
✅ Keep the fuel level above a quarter of a tank. Many vehicles will not carry out a regeneration when the fuel level is too low.
✅ Include regular longer journeys where the engine can reach full operating temperature.
✅ Act quickly if the DPF or engine-management warning light appears.
❌ Don’t repeatedly use the vehicle only for short, cold journeys.
❌ Don’t ignore warning lights or continue driving until the vehicle enters limp mode.
❌ Avoid switching the engine off during an active regeneration where possible. Signs may include a higher idle speed, cooling fans running, increased fuel consumption or a hot smell from the exhaust.
❌ Don’t rely on additives as a substitute for proper diagnosis and repair.
A blocked DPF is often the result of another underlying issue, such as a faulty sensor, thermostat, EGR system, injector or boost-related fault. Simply forcing a regeneration or adding a cleaning product may not correct the actual cause.
