Driving a Large Van for the First Time? Read This First 🚐

Never driven anything bigger than a family car? Hiring a large van can feel daunting, but a few simple habits make a massive difference. The biggest adjustment most first-timers struggle with is judging width and height clearance, especially in car parks and on narrow country lanes (something you'll definitely encounter around North Cornwall and Devon). Before you set off, walk around the vehicle, note the mirrors and how far they extend, and set them properly so you can see the rear corners clearly. You have no rear-view mirror in a panel van, so your wing mirrors are everything.

A few more things worth knowing before you move off: take corners wider than you think you need to, because the rear wheels cut in tighter than the front; give yourself extra braking distance, since a loaded van takes significantly longer to stop than a car; and plan your route in advance to avoid low bridges or weight-restricted roads.
