Diesel drivers may experience a coronavirus-related complication if their car is only used for short runs to the shop or park.

It's all thanks to something fitted to the exhaust designed to make them better for the environment.

The Diesel Particulate Filter, or DPF, has been fitted to all diesels since 2009, and is present on a lot of older cars too.

It's job is to stop soot leaking from exhausts into the atmosphere, but the flip-side of enjoying a frugal diesel is that the soot caught in this filter has to be ‘burned off’ in order to regenerate the DPF.

The best way to burn off the soot is to make sure you regularly treat your car to a good 30 to 50-minute blast on the motorway at sustained speeds. Short runs are the sworn enemy of the DPF, so doing frequent ‘short-runs’ isn’t going to help!

Another good reason to stay at home unless absolutely necessary!
