Here’s a post I’m proud to be writing. Zoe recently passed her driving test at the first time of asking. On her test she had to think quickly and deal with with a broken down car on a blind bend of a 60mph road. She passed with lovely compliments from her examiner after working very hard on approach to her test. Congratulations Zoe 🚘🎉🚘

🚗 DRIVING TEST MANOEUVRES EXPLAINED: THE FORWARD BAY PARK 🚗

The Forward Bay Park is one of the manoeuvres that could appear on your driving test.

You'll be asked to drive into a parking bay and finish centrally within the lines. The manoeuvre can take place in a car park at the start, during, or at the end of your test.

✅ What the examiner is looking for:

• Good observations throughout
• Appropriate speed and control
• Accurate positioning within the bay
• Effective steering control
• Awareness of pedestrians and other vehicles

❌ Common mistakes:

• Not checking all around before moving
• Cutting across bay lines
• Finishing outside the bay markings
• Driving too quickly into the manoeuvre
• Forgetting observations when reversing out

Remember, the manoeuvre doesn't finish when you're in the bay. You'll normally be asked to reverse out safely before continuing the test, so observations remain just as important.

🚗 DRIVING TEST MANOEUVRES EXPLAINED: THE PARALLEL PARK 🚗

Many learners worry about the parallel park, but it’s actually one of the most structured parts of the driving test.

During the manoeuvre, the examiner will ask you to pull up alongside a parked vehicle before reversing and parking safely behind it.

✅ What they’re looking for:

• Good all-round observations throughout
• Effective control of the vehicle at a slow speed
• Accuracy and positioning near the kerb
• Awareness of other road users
• Safe decision making if pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles approach

❌ Common mistakes:

• Forgetting observations whilst reversing
• Mounting the kerb
• Finishing too far from the kerb
• Rushing and losing control of the car

Remember, perfection isn’t required. You don’t have to finish exactly 30cm from the kerb or complete it in one movement. The examiner wants to see that you can carry out the manoeuvre safely, under control, and with good awareness of what’s happening around you.

Always try to keep a pocket of space around you when you’re dealing with junctions, especially roundabouts!
Here’s a clip from Edward’s lesson this week where he showed good position to make sure that the black car on the left didn’t cause any problems when it suddenly moved out into our lane. Great driving to avoid the issue🚗

Do you always try to pass cyclists as quick as you can? This clip from a lesson yesterday shows that sometimes there’s nothing to gain from the overtake. They’ll be able to catch you up at the next traffic lights anyway🚲
