Did this decision from the tractor driver help the situation?

I don’t normally like to call out other instructors. We’re all trying our best to be professional and improve but this instructor really should be doing better. An amber light means stop unless it’s unsafe. I was a reasonable distance behind and they had a full 3 seconds to stop. I should add, this was the instructor, not a pupil.

Further to this week's shenanigans at the roundabout near West Vale, here's how I would do it. The black car had driven a bit strangely prior to the video so instead of flying past it like we saw the white car, I decided to hold back and nullify the risk!

Parents of learner drivers – are you helping or hindering their progress?

Getting some extra practice in between driving lessons can make a massive difference to how quickly somebody learns to drive, but it's important that the practice is actually beneficial.

A few things I'd recommend to parents taking their son or daughter out:

Speak to their instructor – Find out what they've been working on in lessons and what would be useful to practise. There's little benefit in attempting something they're not quite ready for.

Try to stay calm – Learners are going to make mistakes, particularly when they're still getting used to driving. Getting frustrated or raising your voice rarely helps the situation!

Be consistent – The Highway Code and driving techniques have changed over the years. Just because you've been driving for 20 years doesn't necessarily mean the way you were taught is the way your son or daughter is being taught now.

Remember, you're there to supervise, not take over. Give them time to think, make decisions and develop their independence.

Private practice alongside professional lessons can be a brilliant combination, and can help learners become safe, confident drivers.
