A failing DQ500 DSG gearbox - as found in the Volkswagen T5/6 Transporter, Audi RS3 Audi TTRS, Volkswagen Tiguan etc

It’s becoming a more common issue to see worn drive splines on the planet/spider gears and the associated driven shaft, which eventually leads to a loss of drive and a big recovery charge!

This particular gearbox issue was found during our rigorous inspection process whilst replacing an engine.
The customer was called, repair work priced and the fix applied quick smart! 🔧

We’re still here!

The lack of recent posts are due to the massive influx of work - without a social media professional on the team it’s tough to keep up! 😬

Anyway, check this one out…..

A MK7 R came in for diagnosis, displaying lots of random errors with no exact pattern for repeatability and the dash board lighting up like a Christmas tree - with intermittent limp mode
Thrown in for good measure! 🤦🏼‍♂️

As usual, we plugged in VCDS (Odis wasn’t needed for this one), completed a full car scan and saved the info - critical steps for an in depth investigation of a car with ongoing issues.

With fault codes stored we got stuck into testing relevant components and wiring - in doing so it became clear someone else had been here before!

The initial list of repairs needed were found to be:

Replacement coolant blocker valve for cylinder head, wiring plug and wiring all the way back to the 14 pin plug on the chassis leg (someone had already replaced this plug and left it at that🤦🏼‍♂️)
DSG thermostat, plug and wiring all the way back to the 14 pin plug on the chassis leg
Replacement Haldex controller needed - the current item has water damage and is taking down the canbus system.

The car will be booked back in for the appropriate repairs and further testing to ensure all of the faults are reliably cured 😉

This is really starting to take shape! 😍

As our efforts are focussed onto the rear of the Porsche 959 replica/restomod we have started to graft the 997 rear suspension/subframe assembly/wheels into the structure - classic looks with modern handling 😉

Keep checking in as this build steps up a notch and we look to start mounting the turbo engine and PDK gearbox!

As per usual, the engine room is a busy place!

We’ve been overrun with some serious builds, ranging from K20/K24 Honda’s, 20vt race engines, EA888 4 ports 😎 and a several gearbox builds - all being built alongside the engines being repaired or built for fitment in the workshop for our ‘road’ customers.

The time that goes into a good build is eye watering, and no corners can be cut!

Keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks as we get some these builds into the cars and o to the rollers for torture testing! 😉

Every so often you get a minute to drag an old project out of the corner - this project was overdue some love.

After 7 - yes 7 years collecting dust, this E34 BMW M5 was given skmeTLC and tickled into life for the first time.

After carrying out all the usual basic tests and adjustments, making sure the key sensors (not many in this engine) were operating and set up correctly, filling the tank with fuel for the first time, crossing our fingers…. Then pressing the go button - it fired into life without any fuss!

Now it’s time to finish off the wiring, carry out a full chassis set up then move it into the rollers … you’ve got to love the sound of an old school NA race engine in full swing 😍😎 🎵

A snapped crankshaft used to be unheard of in a VW/Audi - for years tails of broken crankshafts used to be linked with the likes of modified Subaru, 3.0v6 JLR engines or old cars with 3 bearing crankshafts….but it seems to be getting far too common in modern VW engines!

Growing up in the ‘golden era’ of the trade….. playing with MK1/2 golf GTI’s, Corrado, Rallye, Audi Quattro etc - rebuilding an engine was normally for performance reasons rather than repairs from components failure.

As prices of new vehicles go up, and component quality seems to go donw, surely it’s time to invest in those 90’s hot hatches which put a smile on your face and were super reliable! 😜 🚗
