📍🚗 WOULD YOU KNOW? – You’ve broken down… BUT WHERE ARE YOU?

The car stops. You grab your phone, call for help and they ask the obvious question…

📞 “Can you tell me exactly where you are?”

“Erm… somewhere on the M5?” 😳😂

That’s a VERY long road!

Knowing who to call when you break down is important - but knowing how to tell them exactly where to find you could be even more important.

So, what can you use?

📞 WHO SHOULD YOU CALL?
For a routine breakdown, contact your breakdown provider.

If someone is injured, you’re in immediate danger or it’s an emergency, call 999.

🛣️ MOTORWAY LOCATION SIGNS
Those little blue signs at the side of the motorway aren’t just decoration!

Driver location signs can tell you the motorway, direction of travel and your position along it. Giving this information can help pinpoint where you are.

📱 USE YOUR PHONE
Open your Maps app and check your current location. You may also be able to drop a pin or share your location directly with someone.

🆘 EMERGENCY TELEPHONES
If you need to use an emergency telephone on a motorway, it connects you directly to the relevant control centre and identifies your location.

🧭 WHAT3WORDS
what3words divides the world into small squares and gives each one a unique combination of three words.

It can be another useful way of communicating a precise location - particularly somewhere rural or without an obvious address.

👀 LOOK AROUND YOU

Can you identify:

➡️ The road number
➡️ Your direction of travel
➡️ The nearest junction
➡️ A location/marker sign
➡️ Nearby services
➡️ A bridge, lay-by, business or landmark?

The more useful information you can give, the easier it is for help to find you.

And remember - never put yourself in danger trying to find your location. Don’t walk along a live carriageway looking for a sign or better phone signal.

So if you ever make that breakdown call…

“I’M ON THE M5” ISN’T A LOCATION! 😂

Know your ROAD. DIRECTION. JUNCTION. MARKER. LOCATION.

It’s another one of those things you might never be asked on your driving test…

FIRST TIME PASS for Kasey from Nether Stowey - and she certainly picked a busy day to show the examiner exactly what she could do!

A massive congratulations to Kasey, who has smashed her driving test FIRST TIME following all her hard work and coaching with Drive It Caroline!

The roads were certainly busy today, but Kasey didn’t let that faze her one bit.

She stayed calm, dealt with the traffic, planned ahead and kept making those safe independent decisions throughout the drive.

And just when the test was nearly over, there was one final opportunity to show off…

🚗 WOULD YOU KNOW? – You’ve had a bump… now what?

Your hands are shaking, the other driver gets out and suddenly you realise…

Nobody ever really told you what you’re supposed to do next.

Even a minor collision can be stressful, so knowing what to do before it ever happens can make a huge difference.

This week’s Would You Know? is all about what happens AFTER a collision.

🛑 STOP
If you’re involved in a collision where injury or certain damage has occurred, you must stop. Driving away could be an offence – even if the damage looks minor.

⚠️ MAKE IT SAFE
If it’s safe and appropriate, switch off your engine, put your hazard lights on and check that everyone is OK. Think about your own safety before getting out, particularly on a fast road.

📝 EXCHANGE DETAILS
Depending on the circumstances, you may need to exchange your name and address and provide other relevant details. Make a note of the other vehicle’s registration, make, model and colour and obtain insurance information.

📸 TAKE PHOTOS
If it’s safe, photograph the vehicles, damage, road layout, signs, markings and anything else that could be important later.

👀 ANY WITNESSES?
Ask independent witnesses for their name and contact details. Their account could prove extremely useful.

👮 DO YOU NEED TO TELL THE POLICE?
There are circumstances where a collision must be reported to the police. If the required details aren’t exchanged at the scene, for example, you may need to report the collision as soon as reasonably practicable and, in any case, within 24 hours.

🤐 DON’T GET INTO AN ARGUMENT ABOUT FAULT
Stay calm, be polite and stick to the facts. The roadside isn’t the place to decide who was responsible.

And, of course, if anyone is injured or there is an immediate danger, call 999.

You might never need any of this information – and hopefully you won’t.

But once those L plates come off, being a good driver isn’t just about knowing how to control a car.

It’s about knowing what to do when things don’t go according to plan.

Drive It Like Gintare!💥

Neither the pouring Somerset rain nor a last-minute bit of test-centre drama was going to stop Gintare today!

A massive congratulations to Gintare from Bridgwater, who has PASSED her driving test following all her hard work and coaching with Drive It Caroline!

And this one certainly kept everyone on their toes right until the very end…

Back at the test centre, Gintare was completing her reverse bay park when the parent of another candidate unexpectedly entered the area and nearly made things rather more complicated than they needed to be!

But this is where proper driving skills matter.

Rather than becoming flustered, Gintare demonstrated excellent observations and awareness, dealt with the developing situation safely and completed the manoeuvre.

Exactly what an examiner wants to see - not somebody who can perform a rehearsed manoeuvre when everything is perfect, but a driver who can observe, assess and respond safely when something unexpected happens.

And after battling the pouring rain too, Gintare finished with some great feedback from her examiner about her drive.

🚗⚠️ WOULD YOU KNOW? – What to do if your car breaks down?

Hopefully it won’t happen very often, but sooner or later most drivers will experience that sinking feeling…

The car’s stopped. Something’s wrong. Now what?

Would you actually know what to do – especially if it happened on a fast road or motorway?

This week’s Would You Know? is all about breaking down safely.

🚨 GET SOMEWHERE SAFE
If you can, move your vehicle away from moving traffic and switch on your hazard warning lights.

🛣️ ON A MOTORWAY?
If possible, leave at the next junction or service area. If you can’t, try to reach an emergency area or other place of relative safety. Don’t automatically assume the hard shoulder is a completely safe place.

👨‍👩‍👧 GET YOURSELF TO SAFETY
If you’ve stopped somewhere safe to exit, get out through the side furthest from traffic and move well away from the carriageway – ideally behind a safety barrier where there is one.

🔺 WARNING TRIANGLE?
On ordinary roads, you can place one at least 45 metres behind your vehicle if it’s safe to do so.

NEVER use a warning triangle on a motorway.

📞 CALL FOR HELP
Contact your breakdown provider. If you’re in a dangerous position or cannot get yourself somewhere safe, call 999.

🦺 BE SEEN
A hi-vis jacket is a simple bit of kit worth keeping in the car – particularly now the darker evenings are here.

⚠️ MOST IMPORTANTLY – DON’T PUT YOURSELF AT RISK.
A car can be repaired or replaced. You can’t. Don’t attempt a roadside repair if doing so puts you in danger, and never walk into a live carriageway.

Passing your driving test teaches you how to drive independently – but knowing what to do when things don’t go to plan is just as important.
