If you are changing lane, first use your mirrors and if necessary, take a quick sideways glance to make sure you will not force another road user to change course or speed. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear, move over.

Mini-roundabouts.

Approach these in the same way as normal roundabouts. All vehicles MUST pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so. Remember, there is less space to manoeuvre and less time to signal. Avoid making U-turns at mini-roundabouts. Beware of others doing this.

You MUST NOT cross or pass a stop line when the red lights show on a railway crossing. Also, do not cross if an alarm is sounding or the barriers are being lowered. If there are no lights, alarms or barriers, stop, look both ways and listen before crossing

Once moving you should keep to the left unless road signs or markings indicate otherwise. The exceptions are when you want to overtake, turn right, or pass parked vehicles or pedestrians in the road.

On a puffin crossing, pedestrians should approach the puffin crossing, press the button, and wait for the green person symbol to appear before moving.

The pedestrians will be able to see the green person on the far side of the road. Thanks to sensors, the traffic should not move until after everyone has completed the crossing.

When reaching the roundabout you should

give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights

check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining

watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all

look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off.

Arm signals are for use when direction indicator signals are not used, or when necessary to reinforce direction indicator signals and stop lights

Right arm out of window, arm circling means I intend to move in to the left or turn left

Right arm out of window, not moving means I intend to move out to the right or turn right

Right arm out of window, arm moving up and down means I intend to slow down or stop

If you are turning right as the diagram suggests and the green filter traffic light is illuminated, oncoming traffic will have a red light giving you priority to proceed
